Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

I have just finished installing a Madman monitoring system on the Patrol. (I can thoroughly recommend Chris Badenhorst for this - his details are on the Madman site under suppliers - even though I am thousands of miles away in the UK his help, advice and after sales support were first class) My Troll is a 2.8 straight six, one of the last before the change to the ZD30 engine.

Does anyone have any idea of the maximum safe operating temperature for the EGT might be? Given that the head is alloy I need to keep an eye on this. In normal UK road conditions (cold and wet) there is obviously no problem, but it would help to know where the red line is when I am mountain climbing in the Atlas or down in Western Sahara or making my way through Kaokoland.

Any thoughts and experience much appreciated.

Removed the EGT valve and mounted the sensor at that point with the probe going into the exhaust manifold.

Stefan - I meant the EGR valve of course. Too many beers last night!

What is this 'too many beers' that you speak of?

The general consensus seem to be ~600 degrees Celcius, (cooler than that if you've mounted it after the turbo)

I agree with Stefan, I don't know the 2.8 straight 6 , but I have the 4.2 straight 6, but I have a cast iron head.... on the Patrol I mean... but back to the topic.

If your EGT temp probe is between the head exhaust ports and the turbo, a MAXIMUM temp i would go to is 630 deg Celcius, but try keep the max to around 600 deg Celcius for pure peace of mind.

If your EGT temp probe is between where the turbo exhaust gas exits the turbo and the rest of the exhaust pipe, in other words plumbed into the exhaust pipe, and depending on how far away from the turbo, I would not go higher than 500 deg C MAXIMUM. From what I've noticed on mine ( I have a pre turbo and post turbo probe), is that tyhere is an average of 100 deg Celcius temp difference between these two reading points. The two points are only +/- 600mm apart, so 100 deg is quite huge.

Hi I have set mine(madman) to 600 deg only when you rev the motor befor you change gear you can see the 600 deg or on those long mountain passes ,but just back off a bit and it falls quiet quickly , on the open road anything between 450 deg and 520 deg at 120km, I put my probe right on the back of the exhaust manifold no. 4 piston where it gets the hottest and you can get the drill and tap in there quiet easy (zd30)

Thanks for your replies and help everyone - really useful information, particularly since I will be in the Pyrenees in the next couple of months at six or seven thousand feet above sea level. Leaner mixture means hotter burn, so a 600 max with 550 do not exceed are good numbers to know. It will be interesting to see how the Patrol copes. The Atlas aren't that high, and Windhoek is only about 4000 feet from memory. I am probably worrying too much but since I travel alone I tend to be cautious with the vehicle.

Transnamib -- few things: That 2,8 .. is it the RD or LD engines?? [I guess it's the RD28]

As per standard the UK Fuel is wayyyyy better quality than we have down South - That means while in U K you can run the EGT at 700 [for short bursts only ] and normal cruise at 650.
Outside of U K and Europe then the figures you have are best

B T W - do you have a Turbo on your Patrol??

On a petrol engine, yes. But not true with a diesel motor - a lean mixture lowers combustion temperatures and over-fueling (diesel-speak for a "rich" mixture) increases them!
