4.8 - No power uphill

For Easter weekend the family decided to go to Gansbaai and the Patrol was loaded to the brim with 4 adults and 2 kids and the Venter with enough stock to last us a month.

Normally the Patrol hardly feels the extra weight but this time it was different. On the open road I didn't feel any difference but as soon as I get a steep uphill there is no power. Going back home on Monday was hectic as the roads were quite busy and as soon as I hit an uphill the speed drops from 120 to 60 and at one stage it went as low as 45! :surprised: I had a string of vehicles behind me and was even passed by an Izuzu 250!! I pulled off the road a few times to let the traffic through.

I realized that it was either not getting fuel or something else was blocked as this is not normal.

Well here are the results: - a blocked fuel filter - look at all the mud!

I still can't believe that it ran so well under normal conditions because I tried to blow through it with my mouth and couldn't get any air through. Just shows how powerful the fuel pump is.

Tip to self: From now on I will carry a spare filter in my toolbox!

Yes - interesting enough a new filter at the Dealers were R85 but they had no stock and it was on back order. Bought the GUD at Autozone for R150

David what would have caused that amount of mud? does that come from the fuel tank ?

2 Questions,

How long ago was the filter changed?

And where are you getting your fuel from?

Dawid mabe you need to drop the tank and have a look inside there ???? There is a small filter infront of the pump and there must be plenty mud in the tank too?

Yip - all I can think of is all those small dodgy fuel stations in the middle of nowhere and filling from drums & Jerry cans in northern Namibia. I will in future replace my filter every 15k km's and not the recommended 40k km.

Gents,

It is for this reason, that I change my diesel filter every 10k km. Rather change filters than damage injectors. :oldtimer: :oldtimer:
