Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

I suspect my Patrol (2007 model with 33 000 km on the clock) was not driven too much in 4x4 mode by the previous owner.
Whenever I select 4wheel Hi from 2wheel Hi, I find it quite difficult to get the dashboard indicator to switch off once I have disengaged 4 wheel drive.
Reversing to lift the pressure off the mating surfaces etc does not help. Plenty of lever action back and forth between 2wheel Hi, 4wheel Hi as well as 4wheel Low and reversing and forward in first gear eventually seems to do the trick
I need to get underneath the car and check out the link and the light switch for 4x4 indication.

I suspect the drivetrain actually does go out of 4 wheel drive, but there seems to be a sticky actuator / switch on the indicator that does not release easily. My suspicion is based on the fact that I do not hear / feel the front wheels chirp on the tar road as if they are still in 4 wheel drive.

Anyone experience something similar or have a better solution?

try turning right and left while moving. Might be axle windup that can be from worn tyres back and new in front eg.

My Patrol is doing exactly the same thing.

I have no problem at all with the 4x4 engaging and disengaging. Smooth and as clockwork. I must say I stop to change from 2H to 4H and 4H to 2H. Try Nissan in Parow and speak to Jokkie Troedy. If you are a PATROL driver he will give you VIP service.

Mine does exactly the same. Sometimes the only way I can get out of 4H is to switch to 2H while driving in a straigt line.

Dare I say it, I preferred the define actions of my Drifter's Transfer case! :o

If I can get this sorted, I'd be a very happy man.

All your Patrol needs is a solid weekend + in 4 wheel Hi and/or Lo and your problem is solved!

After fitting the OME suspension and 285/75/16 MTR's, the Patrol had it's first real 4x4 workout this weekend at Matroosberg!
I drove off the tar road on Friday late afternoon, placing it in 4 Hi. On Saturday we gave the cars a bit of a workout, using 4 Lo for extended periods with difflock used on ocassion. The car only came out of 4 Hi on Sunday late morning.

Previously I had trouble getting it out of 4 Hi to 2 Hi as well getting the difflock to take effect without having to drive 10 - 30 m.

As a result of a bit of use, the difflock kicks in immediately and on the first attempt, the box moved from 4 Hi to 2 Hi!

Btw, Matroosberg was it's usual impressive winter self - wet clay, washed away roads leaving donga's and cross axle ruts at the base of the steep climb - great fun!
Weatherwise it was wet, misty, fresh and cold, especially that early morning bit before sunrise!
For those that live north of the Hottentots Holland mountains, Matroosberg is the second highest peak in the Western Cape (2250 m I think), aprox 30 km outside Ceres, and normally has snow throughout the enire winter and some years even until November.

Gooi bietjie fotos jong!! It sounds like a wonderful trip!! You're right about the use of the transfer case. The more you use it, the sleeker it gets and better it works. Mine is in and out, no sweat. And my Diff lock works damn well. But then again, if you know your Patrol, you'll hardly need it. How does your Patrol handle with the bigger tires? I'm planning to go that size with my next tire purchase!
