Steering shake with MT's.

I fitted steel rims with 33 x 12.5 MT's Kuhmo KL 71 on Friday. My steering wheel shakes at about 80 Km/h. Is this normal for MT's ?

nee !!!! not at all get your wheels checked by independant supplier for balance and if your rims are true also threre is a small recess on the hub thats stops the standard rim hole to sit flush ask tony what happens when it eats away your wheels fall off!! please check it before some one gets hurt :surprised: :surprised: :surprised: :salute: :salute: :salute:

I agree with Tinus.

I also have 33" 12.5 MTs on my Patrol and it's a smooth (if somewhat noisy!) drive...

I took it back to the fitment centre today. They did the alignment and charged me for balancing again. I drove it back to work and it is still the same. The spigot of the new wheels fit perfectly on the wheel hubs. Wat nou?

There are two different ways to mount wheels on a balancing machine. The first and most common method is to mount them on a conical bush in the center hole. Most shops do this, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work on Patrol wheels.

You need to find a shop that mounts the wheels on a fixture that fits into the stud holes.

Secondly, I feel it is unethical of that shop to charge you twice, although I guess it depends on how long it took you to complain. You should take it straight back.

CPA would protect you here, they can not charge you a second time, provided it's within 48 hours. 7 days if mileage is low. ie parked off.

I did a complete Moremi trip and took car back for free, but as I left for Moremi I contacted fitment center so they "knew" within 48 hours.

I had the same problem on my Patrol, for one it is not always the tyres, have a look and see if the rim is locating flush against the hub. On my Patrol's aftermarket rims the center hole of the rim that fits over the freewheel hubs was a fraction to small and the rim actually located skew because it was pushed skew by the freewheel hub. You will be able to feel and see the indentations that were made by the freewheel hub on the center hole if you remove the rim. After opening the center hole the rims located flush, but I still had some vibration one of my rims is bend and the fitment centers does not always pick up. The rim balanced not to bad at two different fitment centers but the one picked up that the rim was bent due to some side impact, the bent rim was moved to spare and the problem was solved.

I have posted a similar thread on this forum. Also battled for ages. Ran my 285's on 7jj rims for ages,regular rotation, no problems, then had them rotated one day and all of a sudden total shaking and slight hop. Tiger wheel and tyre Tokai tried 5 times,1st alignment centre tried 2 times, still couldnt work it out.

I changed every tyre to a different position (thats a lot of different configurations) still nothing.

We spun the rims in the tyre to get lowest amount of weights and then reinflate , still nothing.

Finally spent 5 hours at tiger wheel and tyre again and we found the right ballance. I would say my shaking is 90%-95% gone.

(Ps: Also remember it could be king pins, wheel bearings,panhard rod bushes)

Note: TWAT did not charge me for any of the extra work done, and Mr tyres and 1st alignment centre didn;t charge me for anything!
