How big are my tanks suppose to be?

Post by Zantus »

From the info I had, the tanks in my 2001 4.5GRX should be about a main tank of about 90-95 litres and the sub tank about 35-40 litres.

On Friday night, filling up both tanks for the first time, the main tank took 121 litres and the sub tank took 36 litres....it was close to completely empty, actually started cutting out around a long turn close to the filling station.

Was a +/-120 litre main tank common for the year model?

That does not sound standard to me. I think the standard capacities are 95 and 40 as you said. Mine certainly was and that was what the owners manual also stated as far as I remember.

Hmm, I'll have a look underneath, sounds like it has a long range main tank.

Gents,

Could be that the main tank has been replaced with the Excel tank. Capacity is 136 lt but I get around a 128 lt in. Have a look under the back and see if the tank still has its protection plate. Also if it is SS, it is an aftermarket tank.

Sounds like an aftermarket tank to me too.

The easiest way to recognize it is probably that the standard tank fits between the chassis corner pieces, while the high-capacity tanks usually extend under the chassis corner pieces.

Also, the standard tank has rounded edges and a thin protection plate, while the aftermarket tanks are usually square-cornered and without protection.

I read recently about the newly proposed compressed fuel tanks. It's obviously not recommended for Non Patrol's due to safety hazards. Maybe you lucky and got a prototype

Fill up and see how long your gauge stays full - if around 600km then yes you have the new type. This only works on petrol as diesel kept on exploding under compression and then your gauge won't work.

Or
Peter could be correct...
