Injectors - Lets talk serious

Hey chaps

Some questions on Td42 injectors.

1) How often should one check them? (The manual obviously says every 15 000km, but obviously no one in the world does that)
2) If the motor is running like a dream, should one now mess about and pull these to check, or leave well alone?
3) Would you trust Nissan Technician to do this job ? (i dont)
4) Will the fuel pump need re-setting once the injectors are checked or replaced?
5) Same as No:3 (again, i dont)
6)What kinda costs are involved (Genuine Nissan etc)

I have mine checked every 60k km. SAC diesel take them out check the spray pattern and break pressures. They are not very expensive so most of the time I have them fixed or replaced. I also replace the fuel filter on a shorrter period than what Nissan recommend.

When we had the 3 gas check day they tested the diesels on a smoke meter to what I understand tells you if all is fine with pump and injectors

I don't think it is very expensive test and takes about 5min
If someting doesn't test correct then go to diesel pro
To my understanding Nissan sends it to pump and injector pro anyway

Ja, i know the test, its one of those hand operated pressure tests using a small amount of fuel to blast through, they check for drips or overspray etc. I suppose there is no harm in checking, but i just dont want to fuss about over something that is working well to start with. But, i also advocate preventative maintenance.

Russ the test Tinus mentioned is done without removing the injectors, and is done with the engine running.

It literally takes less than a 1/4 hour. I believe it also gives you a much better idea of the whole system, rather than just the injectors.

Who does this test? Remember, my Td42 has zero electronics etc...nothing. Would this test not be used in conjuction with a motors ECU readings?

It has a probe that goes in exhust and smoke gets tested . Grootseun wil be able to tell you who has got it in the cape a lot of guys saw that their oil burners were 100%

Russ, I am not too sure of the exact details and processes involved.

the machine optically measures the amount and size of the smoke particles in the exhaust gas via a probe inserted into the tailpipe, and then (somehow from this information) determines the performance of the injectors and accuracy of the mixture.

In other words it will be able to determine how good the injectors are and if the pump is correctly calibrated, but if either of the above is not correct, it will not be able to determine which injector is faulty. I believe anyway.

Grootseun sells this equipment and gives training on it's use and should be able to give you more info.

Russ man.... The injectors are so basic (old school technology). I took mine to Bosch Diesel Electric agent, and paid R 425 / injector for them to recon them. I've been told that they need to be checked every 70 000 Km, but I will be checking mine at 60 000 Km which is in about 15 000 Km time. Removal of the injectors is relatively easy ( if you want to do it yourself and take only the injectors in)..... BUT my one word of caution..... the spill rail that has the 6 linked rings that fit onto the injector, that take the diesel back to the diesel tank is a little fragile in that the small pipes that link the rings together can break should you land up twisting it whilst removing the nuts holding everything in place. So, ensure that the injector doesn't twist left or right, and ensure that the rings too do not twist !! I landed up breaking my spill rail and after many hours and swearing, threw the old one in the bin and bought a new one from Nissan..... and no you don't want to know the price was :surprised:

If possible have a look when they test the spray pattern on the injector, and recon as necessary.

Get NEW copper injector washers for where the injector surface meets the head, as well as new copper washers, that have about 3-4 little holes in them, that fit on where the spill rail must be fitted to. AGAIN DON'T LET THE SPILL RAIL TWIST !!!!

You are now good for another 60 odd thousand Km !!! Even if the motor sounds great..... one must do the necessary services. If you hear something is wrong ....It could be too late.... ( this is what happened to my Patrol a few weeks after I bought it. There were no signs that there was anything wrong!!

As for point no 4 .......Diesel pump won't need to be reset.

As for your point no 3..... I don't trust anyone to work on my Iron Maiden..... especially if they know much less than me. :naughty: :naughty:

:helpsign: Guys, my Terrano is now on 195 000kms. It is smoking and I feel I need to redo the injectors, but had a quote for R3500, which I felt was expensive. Is there somebody that I can approach to recon these for me, but not at that price.
