Front Axle Rebuild Parts

I will have to do a front axle rebuild on a GU Patrol some time in the future.

I see on Ebay and some Aussie sites that you can buy swivel hub rebuild kits as per the link below. Is it possible to find a similar kit here in South Africa, or am I better off stripping all the parts off, get what I can from my local bearing supplier and then go to Nissan for the stuff I cannot get from the bearing supplier?

Hello Zantus

As far as I am aware, "pirate" parts kits are not locally available. However, I have not searched very hard.

However, all the bearings are standard commercial items except the large (inner) bearing. This bearing (not available through Bearing Man but can be purchased from Bearings International, but with a small modification. The inside corner radius (shown in red in the attached pic) needs to be enlarged slightly, to 5mm.

This can be done by specialized grinders, or with a pencill grinder in a lathe.

Original bearing is 33110JR, 85mm OD, 50mm ID, 26mm long.

All the seals are Nissan-only parts though. Please see this thread for part numbers and bearing sizes etc:

http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=1859

Also, note that for some Y61 models, Nissan will only sell you a set containing the stub axle, for about R6k. However, all the seals and bearings are the same as for the Y60, for which they will sell you the seals seperately.

furthermore, note that to correctly torque wheel bearings on models fitted with auto-locking hubs, you need a special spanner. I have made some of these and have them available for R223/ea.

Please let me know if there are any further questions?

For the sake of completeness:

The inner wheel bearing has been comprehensively dealt with above.

The outer wheel bearing is: NSK/Koyo part number LM501349(cone) + LM501310 (cup). It's a taper roller bearing, 73.431mm OD, 41.275mm ID, 19.558mm long.

Inside the stub axle, there is a needle roller bearing carrying the sideshaft. I believe this to be BTM3516, 42mm OD, 35mm ID and 16mm long, but have never removed one.

Just an update on the matter:

I ordered the "Swivel hub rebuild kit" from Australia. http://locktup4x4.com.au/swivel-hub-reb ... -1395.html
IT DOES NOT CONTAIN THE WHEELBEARINGS! All the seals for a complete hub rebeuild, including the axle oils seals etc. plus a lot of gasket seals. Four king pin bearings and two roller bearings. All KOYO bearings. I will post a complete photographic report of the rebuild.

The "Wheel bearing kit GQ/GU" seems to contain the wheelbearings. http://locktup4x4.com.au/gq-gu-front-wh ... -1396.html Odd is the hub rebuild kit contains all the special washers, seals etc. you get with the wheel bearing kit, but not the bearings.

The outer wheel bearings Nissan have in stock (±R800 each!) The inner wheel bearings they do not have in the country and it is a matter of waiting for Nissan to get off Skeleton crew before anything certain can be arranged, but it looks to be about R900 odd each.

Bearings international (Jet Park) have the outer wheel bearings (R55 odd ex vat KML and R80 odd plus 1/2 days for the KOYO bearings.) but they cannot supply me the inner wheel bearing (33110JR) that needs to be machined. I am also not sure they understood the cup and cone are seperate part numbers.

Bearing Man Isando could get me the inner wheel bearing (33110JR NOT the JRYA2) in 1 day at 450 odd ex VAT each and R616 odd each for the outer wheel bearings. Total incl VAt is R2425.

Ace Bearings in Kempton Park got me the inner bearings (FAG 33110JR) and the outer bearings (SIN, Japanese brand) at a total of R1100 for two sets of each, in other words less than half the Bearing Man price and even much more affordable than the Nissan prices.

The seals from Nissan (I bought before I ordered the hub rebuild kit) was about R1200. This is only the three seals each side as listed by Peter's post, not all the seals and gaskets for a complete hub rebuild.

TAKE NOTE: I have an extra set of seals should anybody require, make me an offer.

Tomorrow I will take the bearings to Jack's Cutting Edge for modification, R500.

Summary of my wheel bearing expenses (not including the Hub rebuild)
Seals (Nissan) R1200
Bearings (ace bearings) R1100
Modifications (Jack's Cutting Edge) R 500
Sundries (5 litre diff oil, 2kg ghries, parafin, brush, etc) ±R450
Special washers not accounted for, included in my hub rebuild kit, which postage and tax and diving Rand all included amounted to a whopping R3713.

The R3600 SAC job from some other post seems like a bargain, but It seems they did not replace all the seals, understandably they should not require replacement at 120 000km, but while you are doing the labourious job...? The bearing prices does not corrolate to any quote I obtained - but then there was very little coorolation between any of the quotes.

see http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f= ... 6&start=20
Wheel bearing ("wb") small: 289.48
wb big: 2065.80
wb oil seal: 96.48

Mine is at 350 000km's, so I will redo everything and look into the matter again at ±700 000 km.

Will let you know about the success.
