Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hi

I am looking for a rear lower control arm for GQ or GU. I need to see if I can put on my old Patrol or if I need to put long arms on.

Not to worry. Long arms 70% on. The new owner will have the first long arm suspension in SA, or so I believe.

The brackets are on and the arms will go in tomorrow. As soon as they are in I will post some pics.

Snapped the left rear control arm on my 4.5 yesterday while going up a steep axle twisting "walletjie" close to my house.
Place i often drive up (with the 4.5, the bakkie cant get there without difflock).

Only realised it snapped today after my wife mentioned that the car feels funny...

Anyway. I need to go to pta/jhb on sunday, what is the thoughts on welding it back together, maybe also reinforcing it with flat bar or angle iron untill there is time to get new ones? Will just be doing tar driving.

I would personally not attempt that - not with my welding-foo in any case. I am sure Graham or Dawid will have a spare which they can possibly courier to you ?

I repaired one for Mark Greenhill a few years ago. That car now belongs to Andre du Randt.

There is a steam pipe size that fits exactly around the existing pipe. I split a piece of that in it's length, and welded it all around the existing link, about 30mm from each end.

I am not entirely sure, but I may actually have a piece of that pipe left. Fanus, kan jy vir my daai pyp se OD rofweg meet, dan gaan krap ek in die garage...

Peter, jy het nie al daaraan gedink om sterker control arms te maak nie? (en miskien langer vir voertuie wat gelig is? mens kan seker nie te lank gaan sommer om die mounts te verander of te skuif nie?)
Lyk vir my Nissan het maar n dun round tube gebruik vir die... het al van n paar gehoor wat gebreuk het.

I think the correct name is the trailing arm not a control arm.....not that it makes any difference.

Fanus I am not a big fan of welding these suspension components, but thats just my personal choice as you can very easily make it worse than before if you dont know what you are doing.

These trailing arms are not made very strong, but is only meant to keep the rear diff from moving back and forth. So it only needs to be strong enough to do one job. I think most of these trailing arms that fail has had a knock at some stage when offroading and bends it or dent it and this weakens it which leads to a failure.

First prise would be to get one from David, I dont think it will cost too much.
You can also phone Tommie Watkins as he is stripping his GU at his house.......sure he will give you one for very cheap
