Hi All

One of my friends owns a Patrol 4.5 GRX 1998 , He needs a complete front diff nuckle since his current one is leaking oil rather badly. He unfortunately could not get out of the way when a tree jumped infront of his Patrol.

According to Nissan in Emp this cannot not be fixed and need to be replaced, they quoted him R75K.

ANY HELP , SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED

Shalom

Here are the pics, I spoke to the workshop manager at Nissan Empangeni, they have replaced the seal 3x in the process but everytime the vehicles turns it cuts the seal and then the oil leaks out. He has send it to machine shops to see if they can do anything but no luck, iron to hard for them to do anything. He also said the back diff has a problem that the inner tubes that houses the sideshafts are bend? I was not aware that the rear diff have inner tubes? that houses the sideshafts ??

As you can see there is quite some oil where it is suppose to be dry

Jules, I think somebody is making a mistake.

Firstly, there is not supposed to be any oil in there. There is an oil seal in the end of the axle tube (there where the thin section is).

This should hold the oil back, and it should never reach those seals on the ball. Those are in any event not oil seals, they are there to keep dust and water out. Inside that knuckle there should only be grease, being the grease inside the Birfield (CV) joint (that black CV joint grease), and some (lithium soap-based grease, the yellow stuff) grease spread on the ball and in the king-pin bearings around which the knuckle turns.

If they have replaced the oil seal on the inside (and re-assembled everything without damaging the oil seal), and oil is still coming out, then the chances are that the axle tube is bent and replacing the knuckles will not help, the axle tube would then need to be replaced. to get to the oil seal, you have to pull the drive shaft out of the diff after removing the knuckle.

There is no mention in the manual of an inner tube on the rear diff. There is a "seal spacer", which is a short tube which holds the oils seal, and if this is damaged it might cause oil leaks, but this shouldn't be that expensive to replace?
