thumb on 4.8GRX Auto when 1st is selected

Post by Pieter67 »

I desired for a long time and recently bought a 2004 4.8GRX Auto (my first ever Auto gearbox) with 60 000km and found that when I stop at stoplight for example, a moment after I came to standstill, there is a "thumb" through the drivetrain as 1st is selected. The same happens when I break sharply for a short moment. I am worried that it will result in a gearbox work costing a lot in a few months and can currenlty take it to the dealer to fix under warrantee. Someone told me there is a 'slack' on the propshaft to prevent it from snapping and is therefore normal. Is this so?
The dealer tested it and say all Auto's do this. Is this so?
I took it to a Nissan Gearbox specialist (used by dealers in Pretoria) and they say there is no error codes on gearbox but the gearlever needs work as it always goes to 4M when switched from Auto to manual irrespective what gear I am in, even when I stand still. Also, the cruise control does not work in manual. But they cannot give me price as they need to open it first. That's when the cost start...
I am confused between all these opinions and would like an unbiased opinion of someone driving a similar car that can telll me whether I am paranoid or whether I have something to be worried about. Your expert (experienced) opinions will be appreciated.

Hi Pieter67.
All 4.8 auto's go into 4th when tiptronic/manual is selected and cruise control gets disengaged automatically when manual mode is selected as well.
There is a mod to override the cruise control to work in manual as well, maybe these Nissan Gearbox specialist (used by dealers in Pretoria) are not too clued up!
The "thumb" sounds not good... Have it checked out by real "specialists"
Hope this helped a bit, when the other Patroler's wake up the morning feed back should come in non stop!

Agree with G-Man. It is working just fine if it goes to 4th. On the thump when it selects 1st I was also concerned as you can see in this post: http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=1139. I have since changed my driving style slightly by just driving slowly the last few meters before stopping and allowing the gearbox to select 1st while the vehicle is still moving- this totally eliminated the thump. I think it is also related to the slightly higher idle speed when the climate control is working

This is the link to the cruize-control in manual mod: http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/diy-modi ... mod-44263/ - works great :salute:

Agree with G-Man. I had the same issue with a slight thumb when stopping. I greased the two prop shafts and no more issues.

I've had same experiences - I do not think there is anything wrong with with your box - definately nothing you need to spend money on anyway.

Thanks for all the feedback, it seems as if nothing is wrong except for perhaps a bit of grease on propshafts?
