Patrol as a retirement vehicle

My parents went to see a new patrol at nissan and interestingly my mother liked it! Coming from a DIESEL D3 with more bells and whistles than most vehicles, fuel consumption of 12km/l@120 they (10 comb), are considering a 4.8 as it's "simpler" and more bundu proof.
They just recently also bought an awesome Conquerer (I think) 4x4 trailer and got rid of the poorly built Explorer but as a matter of interest what would the expected fuel consumption be like with a 4.8 and Explorer caravan?
Would you guys HONESTLY recommend a 4.8 Patrol as a good retirement vehicle? ie last 4x4? They're considering new. Is it realistic expecting a 4.8 to last 15 years properly serviced or should they keep their D3 diesel?

For any vehicle owner, 15 - 95 years old, who can afford the 4.8's running cost....buy it and enjoy it! In fact: What a fantastic retirement experience!!!!
The 4.8 with heavy trailer should still give you around 5km/l on open road. In 4x4 conditions it should be heavier. The exact figure will depend on the type of terrain, speed etc.

Koos you can let me know if this is what you expected:
Dieselfan,

it makes no financial sense to buy a new car
unless your employer forces you to buy new as a company car. On somthing like a 4.8 Patrol, you lose nearly 50% of the car's value the moment you drive it off the dealer floor. Why would anybody throw R300 000 down the toilet just for the doubtful privelege of having a warranty that the dealer will probably find a way to wangle out of if anything really big does actually go wrong? You can replace the entire drivetrain with a new one for the money you lose. Secondly, I have yet to see somebody buy a car for their retirement and keep that car for 15 years, because so many things change in 15 years.
I am quite happy that a 4.8 Patrol if well maintained and used sensibly will last 15 years, hell my 4.2 is 15 years old and shows no signs of expiring yet, and it has had a tough life. But if they are planning for their retirement they moss don't have to be in a hurry? Let them wait untill a nice clean 1 or 2-year old comes along on which they can confidently establish the history and save a pile of cash that they can use much better.

Not my intention, as my dad used to always say "rather be an idiot for a second than an idiot for a lifetime."
Besides Koos the reason I ask here is I found the Patrol forum to be the most honest and unemotional. YOUR replies as you have both, JG as he has a Toy have both assisted GREATLY, heck I have some of his PM's even printed out! I'm asking legit questions, not stirring for the sake of it. Besides the Patrol / Defender debate was balanced and we saw great pics too ;), maybe near the end it got "jokey".
This thread however is simple, if you were approaching retirement and your bucket list includes many other African countries, is the 4.8 a good choice over other 4x4's? My dad is nervous after reading a guy who got 40l/100km towing a boat

Peter you have hit the nail on the head, couldn't agree more, what you have said makes perfect sense.
Diselfan, I have just joked about the question bit, I am one that always do a lot of research like you.
I personally can not see anybody that do research can go for a 4.8 Patrol above a 4.4 V8 D4, I dont know what's the price difference but I know what the research results will tell me.
What trouble or hick up's have your folks had with their D3 ?
