Hi All,
I've posted this here because it's not really about the technicalities of the turbo installation and thus I dont want to spam the techie categories.
So.. anyone added a turbo to a TD42? Were you happy with the outcome performance vs. fuel economy?
My biggest concern is that not many people have done this mod in SA so your SACs of the world might mot be familiar with the best set-up.
Koos; I know you were contemplating this route. What's your 2c?

Len, yes I wanted to but bought a GU for a bargain, but my investigation showed me the guy to speak to is at Megawarld CPT Dennis Maytom, his the guru , he would have bought me the kit in Oz and bring it over. He speaks with authority about this conversion, all the other guys seems to be a bit amateurs in this.
Apparently its a a different vehicle after the conversion(much better).
That my 2c

Thanks Koos. Seems like all Patrol roads lead back to Dennis

Hi weskus surfer
Die kar gee my 6.6kml teen 130/140 kmh.Die Patrol loop 140kmh gemaklik vol gelaai.
Ek moet se dis n ander kar met die turbo,ek kan nou met gemak verby steek, bulte klim ens.

(ek sien kans vir die ingevoerde kits

)
Groete Frans

Hi Weskus Surfer,
Yep, my GU is turbo`d. The conversion was done by Alpine Developments (by the previous owner) and I am very happy with it. The Alpine set up is fairly conservative. It uses a mitsubishi TD04 turbo, and a smallish front mounted intercooler, and runs fairly low boost (0.4bar).
I have driven the std 4.2D on a number of occasions, and the turbo definately transforms the vehicle. My particular setup gives 113kw and 402nm, which is quite a decent increase compared to the std figures. In a recent trip to Zambia and Botswana where I travelled in convoy with a Non Turbo 4.2D, the fuel consumption figures were more or less identical. We both had RTT`s, and roof racks and were running 33" M/T tyres, and on the open road both vans were getting about 14.4l/100km.
The vehicle is more relaxing to drive on a long trip once you have the turbo as you never have your foot hard down just to maintain cruising speed. Performance wise I would say that the turbo brings things pretty close to a 4.5 petrol Patrol (you still have less kw, but this is balaced by greater torque).
These motors are very strong, BUT you will kill it if the conversion is not done properly. In this regard an EGT gauge is a must, and I would not personally run more than 0.5bar boost if you want to retain the longevity of the motor. As a precaution I have reduced my oil change intervals from 10 000km to 5 000km, since the oil works a lot harder with a turbo fitted. In my understanding, the early GQ spec 4.2`s (pre '94 I think?) had a stronger build (beafier pistons and conrods), and these can be turbo`d more agressively, the later motors are still very strong but must be treated with some respect in the turbo`ing process.
As long as you do your homework and make sure of a competant installation, this is a conversion that you will definately not regret!
My 2c
