Power steering pump

Hi guys

I have a fluid leak on my power steering pump, and would like it to stop.

My manual has the following words of wisdom on the subject:

"NOTE: Extensive knowledge is required to overhaul or repair the power steering pump. The cost of the repair kit and time normally exceeds the cost of an exchange or second-hand unit so if problems exist, it is recommended that one of these units be installed."

Can anybody recomend a supplier for reconditioned power steering pumps, or a supplier for a new pump? Also, is this pump unique to the Patrol or is it also used in other Nissan (or other) products?

Finally, can anybody enlighten me about what is so difficult about repairing them? If I do strip it down, what am I likely to bugger up?

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,

I had the same problem towards the end of last year. I took my pump for reconditioning to JD Break & Steering they are next to SAC in Boksburg, the cost was about ~R800, I will just check the invoice again.

Cheers
Rudolph

I also can't see what rocket science is involved in stripping the pump, it's not like it's this speed sensitive units with some electronics to it either.

Hi Peter,

Had mine done at Makano Motors at Centurion - My diesel GQ's power steering pump is the same unit fitted to the 80 series cruiser. We used the seal kit from the cruiser and bob's your uncle.

Cruiser to the rescue....ha...ha...

Grappies op 'n stokkie. Peter, jy kan gerus by Gemini spares in Jhb hoor wat hulle jou vir die pomp of die kit gaan vra.

Hi Guys

To answer Peter's question about what is so special about overhauling a power steering pump:
A power steering pump is in some ways similar to a disk brake caliper - very fine tolerances, high hydraulic pressure requiring very straight and flat mating surfaces for good sealing etc.

The money referred to in overhauling one is peanuts in comparison to battling on your own without the specialised tools etc.
If you do it everyday and you are familiar with the technology, then go for it, but I would rather pay the piper and have a happy pump!!!

The school fees paid courtesy of Land Rover taught me exactly where my own limitations lie, thank you!

At what sort of age and km's did the symptoms make themselves known?

Herbie the leak has been evident for as long as I have had the car. I found part of the problem in a loose hose clamp, but there is still a leak at the pump.
I have also noticed that at very low revs (400 and less) there is virtually no assistance, but I am not sure whether this is normal.
The car is a 1996 model and had 220 000 km on when I bought it.
