Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

I did the usual oil and oil filter change on Saturday and although this isn't the first time, it is not a very clean operation. Seems like 8 of the 10 litres of oil gushes out in the first few seconds, the little indent/catchment area in the sumpie would always overflow in 2 secs. This time i tried what I thought was a big funnel (into the sumpy) and it filled up so quickly and also overflowed.

Fortunately i prepare beforehand for this. Old cardboard box under the sumpy, cheap R10 shower curtain under the cardboard box and lots of lappies at the ready.

So how do you guys get the oil from the sump into the sumpie without any dramas?

I heard in the US that Jiffy Lube simply pumps out the used oil from the filler hole at the top. Does anyone have a setup like that?

Make sure your sumpie can breathe. Open one of the other screw in breathers. I have no problems on mine. Air can escape and will not cause an airlock.

Also, do you have the filler cap on or off? Keeping it on slows the pouring rate.

The larger spares shops sell those devices that suck the oil out, because some modern cars do not have drain plugs (Merc don't want people to service their own cars), but I think they are fairly expensive.

This time I left the filler cap on but Wheels' suggestion explains the big bubble that shot out the funnel.

I think the problem lies in the fact that their is no word such as "Patroltjie". "Sumpie" therefore just sounds undersize to me. I use the bottom half of a 20L plastic container. Simple, cheap and no speed limits.

JG you are quite correct. For most of my life I have used a plastick skottel.

However the nice thing about the supie is the cleanup and disposal of the oil afterwards. Mine lives underr the bench in my workshop and collects all my waste liquid such as stuff that has just been used to clean paintbrushes and petrol that has been used to clean parts. Before I service I just chuck it on the roofrack and go and empty it at the dump.
