Re. the Handbrake, why I am asking picked up a Patrol brochure the other day from Nissan and saw on the brochure it stated Diesel with Transmission Handbrake and Petrol on the back wheels, WHY? THE DIFFERENCE.

Maybe its new but it stated 4.8 have different handbrake.

Originally the Y61s all had transmission mounted parking brakes; even the very early 4.8s, I think. Somewhere in the middle of 2002 the 4.8 got larger diameter brake discs, presumably making it possible to fit drum-in-disc park brakes to the rear wheels, which might work out cheaper than the single larger drum brake on the transmission. The other models did not get bigger brakes, but retained the awesome transmission mounted park brake.

I must say, I love my 4.5's park brake. Compared to the mediocre performance one normally gets from a drum-in-disc setup, it is amazing. How do owners of the 4.8 find its drum-in-disc park brake?

I have not yet handbrake-parked the Patrol with my trailer attached against a steep mountain slope, but in all other conditions I have not yet had any problems.
I prefer the rear wheel handbrake as a result of the problems experienced with the Land Rover transmission brake setup. The Landies are renowned for leaking oil which would find its way into the brake shoes of the transmission mounted drumbrake ... and the sand would stick to the oil and start a sandpapering exercise and from there on it is just downhill, pardon the pun! I also dislike the up to half a metre of roll that the transmission mounted jobs have. No such issues with the rear wheel handbrakes. Hulle vat vas!

Are there issues I need to watch out for with the rear wheel drum in disc setup?

All I can say is that my Patrol does not leak oil and the handbrake does not allow the car to roll back 0.5 m.

One good thing with the transmission brake is that if the Patrol is parked in 4wd with the handbrake on, you can not lift the back and tow it away.

Dont' know abot 0.5m, but I found the movement of the car a little disconcerting as I've never before experienced this.

Other than not being able to tow the vehicle away when parked as Herrie described, what are the advantages/uses of a transmission handbrake?
