Looking for some info approx fuel consumption on road, offroad farm roads and offcourse trails eg dunes and the like . Is it all that bad

And what is the Cape Town licence fee for a Patrol.. Do they charge per litre or ???

what do you guys get in the 4.8,s driving about 110km/h with full load? or what your average consumption.
There is plenty nice clean patrols on the market, mainly 4.8,s

Fuel consumption is not an issue on a 4.8 L (GL)! - I stop at the service station, fill up, pay and drive off - same as everyone else ...
What I did not add is how often I have to stop to repeat the procedure ... he he he ...

At this stage I am not yet too concerned about the consumption - I am still on honeymoon with all that power and that straight 6 sound!!!

Have not had the Patrol that long, but here is my experience to date:
1. 110 - 130 km/h (120 average) on the open road, lightly loaded = 6,5km/l
2. 140 km/h (on the GPS) = 150 km/h on speedo, also lightly loaded = 5,3 to 5,4km/l
3. Heavily loaded, towing trailer (800 kg +) travelling up mountain passes = 4,8 - 5,3 km/l

A friend travelled from Windhoek to Vioolsdrift heavily loaded with a roofrack stacked 2 low lid ammo boxes high, in 6 hours, including 2 stops of which 1 was a longish lunch break. Translated into an average speed of 133 km/h, implying a speedometer average reading of 150 - 170 km/h. Consumption = 4,8 - 5,0 km/l .
Do the last bit with a diesel and see how close you get to the same consumption!

The same guy did the Namib trip (the one where you drive out approx 140 km into the desert, pitch camp and drive out in different directions each day - includes some serious dune driving). Recorded an average of 3,1 km/l if I remember correctly. His was the only vehicle that managed all the obstacles first try!

Yes, the bill at the pump hurts, but the relaxed driving style and ability to maintain / increase speed up hills as well as quickly accelerate when I wish to pass another vehicle makes it so worthwhile!

As they say with the Cruiser 4.5 - that sticker on the side indicating the engine size is also the consumption.
The same applies to the Patrol, that 4.8 indicator is not just the engine size ...

Well said Herbie. The fairy in your fairy tail is me and the figures are correct. This is for the manual patrol's. The auto's is heavier on fuel. On all my trips there is always LC 105, prado 4l and the 4.8GL is always lighter on fuel or more or less the same.

My GRX4.8 Auto gives about 5.5 - 5.8 km/l on long trips. Combine that with a bit of off road = 4.8 km/l. Can't give you figures for town driving because that's where I use the Bantam.

Hell thats not bad at 110 -120km/h. In fact I think its great. Maybe I must migrate to a 4.8, petrol engines are great.
Just to stir, I recently read an US test report in towing, Petrol vs Diesel vehicles , in this report the Petrol engines knock the hell out of diesels, .
What I rememberred was that it said how you can grind a petrol with heavy loads and diesels dont like it , diesels shows wear and tear very quick if nailed hard day on end. Also diesels cant work hard in high ambient temperatures(can but not for long), petrol can and reach high mileage.I will try and find it again and send you the post. .
Another thing why does the Petrol Patrols have normal handbrakes and the diesel the transmission handbrake.

To put this into perspective I drive a 1995 4.2 Petrol Patrol, 125Kw @ 325Nm, my consumption very lightfooted I must add
Best 7.1km/l travelling 100 - 110km/h. Worst 4.8km/l towing 4x4 trailer travelling at 120 - 140km/h. Offroad depending sand or normal trail worst 4.3km/l.

So me thinks with all that BRUTE power 198Kw under the 4.8 the consumption you guys are talking about is excellent. My one brother in law has a 105 GX Cruiser and he has never even smelled 6km/l even if he drives lightfooted.

I have driven the 4.8 Auto not yet manual but that auto was awesome so I got out very quickly else I would have sold my house and moved into a caravanpark.

Firstly, the petrol Patrol's handbrake is also on the propshaft!

I have the 4.5 and during my trip to Botswana and Vic Falls my average was 4,8km/l - heavely loaded and the aircon on most of the time. For the trip between Maun and Kasane I was told to work on 3km/l - I got 4,3km/l!

On the resent trip to Chakas Rock and back I got between 5,5 and 6 km/l.

In town I average 4,8km/l because I love the power!!!!!

Total distance travelled: 5 650km (GPS)
Total fuel used: 930L
Total fuel cost: R7 400
Aver. fuel consumption: 6.1km/L

Best I got was 6,77km/L
(lang pad @ 120km/h)

Worst was 5,23km/L
(playing in dunes and plenty beach driving)
