Hi,

Is the steel "Loop" at the back of the Patrol (Just above the tow ball on the bumper) a recovery point?

No, but I had my weld point reinforced and the plate grinded flat again and remounted. Have done about 5 recoveries no prob, but still don't trust it 100%. My steel, rear bumper is now on the visible horizon though - after almost losing my std. one completely about 2 weeks ago. Let's see what insurance has to say.

But looking at your question again, I'm not sure that we're talking about the same thing. Can you send a pic.

See this link:

Quite a few chaps have done similar to me and welded to make stronger, but the consensus is, only in emergencies. I use mine maybe once a week, so not ideal.

Hi Stefan,

You talking about this loop? (above tow hook, to the left of the water bottle)

Lots of debate on that one as JohnBoyZA pointed out. I've only recovered a camry with that loop before. Some guys claim it was a tie down point but it looks like it would make a rather awkward tie down point. If I were to recover anything larger than a Suzuki (for example a land rover :clown: ) with that I'd be doing a lot of digging/prep etc first.

I saw some really nice and solid recovery points at 4x4 Mega World but was advised by a knowledgeable Patrol fundi that a pin type tow hook would be sufficient. Disclaimer: NOT THE TOW BALL BUT THE PIN :naughty:

I'd be pretty nervous recovering anything to be honest. Flying body parts and what-not...

Hi,

Yes Len, that's exactly the loop I was refering to. I've got a ball and pin fitted to the tow-hitch and I've heard different opinions on that as well, the majority of which relates more to the mounting of it (with High Tensile bolts) than the piece of kit itself.

The loop seems sort of flimsy to me and as stated on the excellent thread posted by John, my concern is its size and mounting orientation.

I love this one though and would pay good money if anyone can manufacture one like it:

Thanks for all the information so far.

Remember those hooks were there before the bumper and tow hitch were fitted so they could manourve the vehicle in the factory
