Performance Update

Hi Everyone

Been very busy and quiet lately as I am preparing the Patrol for a 4 week Kgalagadi and Botswana tour during June / July.
Suspension was upgraded in Dec to OME shocks and medium duty coils plus steering damper. Still considering air bags to assist rear suspension with trailer towing & 100 litres of fuel on the roof.
Then the Safari snorkel followed and today fitted a 63mm free flow stainless steel exhaust from the downpipe flange to the rear.
Car is more responsive with a nice sound to boot, yet still quiet when travelling high speed .
Hilux drawer system fitted with 15 mm to spare - Great! 50 litre Watertank fitted as well as Waeco fridge and second battery inside drawer system.
New 160 l/min compressor works really well.

Just need to finish the electrics and we are set for a lekka holiday!

Slowly but surely we are getting there!

11 June is D-day to get out of RSA!

Did you go the Powerflow route? I am planning to do that and maybe a chip but not sure if it is really worth the effort & money.

Going to Namibia myself but there might be more SA people there than at home! :surprised:

Hi David

Yes indeed, I have had a motoring relationship with Roddy Newsham from Powerflow in Parow for more than 12 years.

His workmanship and his product knowledge is superb. He asked what I was looking for as there were a couple of choices. 1. Nice beat. 2 Loud etc
The cheap option is to remove the big silencer and the one behind it as well. They are then replaced with a st/st free flow version. The pipework remains 57mm except around the silencers and the rear nissan silencer is retained. Vaatjie has this option on his 4.8.
The expensive option (which I followed) was to replace the entire system from the downpipe flange with 63 mm pipe all the way and to fit a biggish silencer (a lot smaller than the Nissan one) and then the rear silencer is also replaced by a freeflow. The result is a nice beat with a bark at the high end that is reminiscent of the Skyline 2.8 GTX! When the car pulls from low revs it has a nice dark sound which you can hear from within.

The problem of course now is that I only want to drive the Patrol, but at its prodigous rate of consuming unleaded that is not on for everyday driving!

I will post my towing and touring experience once I have some miles under my belt with the mods.

Enjoy a crowded Namibia!
Herbie

Very nice - I also know Rod from the days when he was still at the Saltriver branch with Dick.

You end up with a well tanned right arm as the 4.8's exhaust burble sounds so much better with the window open
