Just a casual observation with experience with rim size when I used to race cars on the track,.... In the class we raced, we could fit a rim one inch down and one inch up from standard. Early 1750 Alfa Berlinas came with 15" rims and later ones came with 14" rims, so we could use 13", 14", 15" and 16" rims. This meant we did not have to change diff ratios to suit a particular track, we just took the right diameter rims and tyres that suited the particular track.

Lichtenburg was a short tight track and 13" rims were our choice, but anything more than 10 laps, caused us to run out of brakes, even with cold air brake ducts fitted. For a 1 hr race (once a year they had an all comers 1 hr race) we ran 15" rims and never had the problem.

Yes, one cannot compare that directly with a Patrol on the road or on a trail, but when driving for instance in Swaziland, from Mbabane down to the Ezulwini Valley with a camp ready Patrol, I did run out of brakes down that 3 km long steep windy piece of highway down into the valley, so it can and does apply to an extent...
