The worst instance I have seen was a new Defender 90 Puma crawling across a small gully on nearly-flat ground in 1st gear low range. It nearly fell over where the Patrol lifted a wheel about 4".
I have also observed Defenders on trails many times and they generally are able to keep their wheels on the ground quite impressively, unless they have been fitted with very stiff springs aimed at carrying really heavy loads. Here is an example of a D90 flexing, but far from maxed out:

Peter there's still loads of pics of Defenders so not a D3 vs thread yet

Gerrit as always your posts lack emotion and yet fly over my head   clearly an engineer.

I'm bumbed at not finding many Patrols for sale still trying to convince myself the jump to 5km/l is affordable, looking at most people on here's job descriptions doesn't help the cause with my wife
Had to get from A to B in a hurry lastnight...the pathy diesel moves I'm sure on the odd occasion the 4.8 will too.

It looks like my Lesotho trip will be delayed till next week or as soon as there's a cold font, got my son a temp passport today. So SHOULD be doing Hennops (this trail is so vehicle friendly and good for learners) on Sunday for a "belated" fathers / guys day.

Why is it you have to spend money just before trading in a car?!!! My tyres are shotish and I don't want to spend 12k and then trade in  for a Patrolie :woo:

A colleague of mine took his brand new Disco 4 TDV6 into the Okavango Delta....halfway in and FAR from Maun he get's a "Take vehicle to workshop immediately" warning light on his dashboard...he's been too embarrassed to talk to me about the vehicle since he got back...seems the fancy traction control system didn't take too kindly to all the water.

Eish!
Sorry to hear about that major disco problem, the problem we dont have any suitable qualified mechanics here, just general mechanics.
Landrover, in that case after even claiming there second hand vehicle has been quality checked, should have come to the party and just replaced the stuff.
For them its not that expensive, and they have a happy customer.

Therein lies the rub. All the articulation and clearance in the world sounds great but the macho stuff won't help if the gearbox decides to up and die in the Congo only 200km from the nearest paved road.

Or the center diff starts making funky noises like someone feeding bolts into a meat grinder. Or the radiator gets the idea to spew coolant like a demented geyser. Or the engine won't start in the Russian cold, thus leaving the driver and passengers to contemplate the crisp and wintry Russian outdoors.

And we haven't even said the five-letter word yet that Landie owners hate. You know, that word, the one that starts with an "L" and ends with an "s" and means "electronic gremlins."

You get the idea.

Ah, but Kevin that is almost not a problem anymore!

You can now buy on E-bay genuine Lucas replacement smoke! All you need then is the special tool to insert it again. :rolling:
