Frankenstein is reborn!

I do still have one teething little issue though. I have a temperature-related vapour lock issue in the fuel supply system, which seems to point to the fuel pump getting excessively hot, but there are some plans afoot, hopefully one of them sorts it soon.

However, it managed to do the whole of Hennops on saturday morning, in fine style as always. Even made a Jeep Rubicon feel a bit miffed at one point.

I promise I will post pictures, but you guys will have to be a bit patient, I am experiencing some issues at the moment.

O yes, the good part: my "poor man's dyno" says there is a fair amount more power: It used to do 0-100 in around 30 seconds, it now does it in 18.

Peter, very glad to hear that you are back on the road! As for the statement about "a fair amount more power"… that must be the understatement of the month…almost halving your 0 to 100 time!

Great to hear that your Patrol is back in business. Now you must consider changing your signature to indicate that you have a 96 Y60 4.5 SGL.

I had a similar discussion with Tinus yesterday. He wants me to put a new logo on the back door.

I said if the logo changes, it's going to say 1.3 or something...

OK, I have been driving it for just more than a month now, and I think I have all the issues sorted.

the only major modifications were this adaptor plate to fit the 4.2's inlet manifold to the 4.5 head:

The thermostat housing section was cut off the 4.2's manifold so that the 4.5's thermostat housing could be used, as the 4.2's thermostat would have interfered with the alternator mounting. However, I drilled a hole in the top of the thermostat cap to add the bleed hose which is part of the 4.2's cooling system.

The other major mod was to go from mechanical to electric pump. This required a total rethink of my vehicle's (non standard) fuel supply system, and to be honest I am still not 100% happy with the system as it is now. Under long periods of full-throttle use, I still experience some fuel starvation.

One very noticeable change is how much cooler the new engine runs. The old one used to go to 90 degrees even under normal light duty, while the new one tends to sit just at or above the point where the thermostat opens, untill you hit a really long uphill or you run the aircon. I don't think I have had the new engine over 90 degrees.

I suspect this points to a problem in the old engine, as the cooling system is basically unchanged, and the radiator was replaced several months before the old head blew.
