Carlo Aluminium is an option, but it is much more expensive than steel, particularly in an application where bending and welding is required such as this. Also, if you manage to bend it, then steel is easier to repair.

Here is something else to think about: if you are in terrain rough enough to hang this plate on, perhaps it is better to hang up so that you have to get out and look at what you are doing, rather than sliding of and knocking a hole in your fuel tank?

I am ashamed to say that I only managed to fit the skid plate that I bought from PeterC ages ago this weekend. I am just a lazy bugger, I am afraid  .

Anyway, here are some dodgy cell pics of the fitted skid plate. I had to use a little bit of gentle persuasion with a heavy hammer to adjust the pins that go into the holes in the chassis, but it was an easy fit.

In my case the bolts supplied with the skid plate did not interfere with the chassis as mentioned by a previous poster, as my Y61 has a neat hole provided for the tip of the bolt to disappear into. Fitting the skid plate is easier with the longer bolts, as the mounting concept depends to some extent on spring loading the plate into position to make it secure and rattle resistant and with shorter bolts it would be difficult to get them started.

The skid plate certainly is sturdy and should provide a good bit of protection to the transfer case in extreme situations. I seems as though it should be able to support the vehicle's weight, if the load is applied in the vicinity of the bends.

Thanks Peter!

Jules, my Patrol het 'n gat in lyn met die gat wat gebruik word om die plaat vas te bout. Die bout se punt kan dus daarin verdwyn.

Just for interest's sake, I had the opportunity to look carefully at a SWB Y60 on Saturday.

They have a factory-fitted skidplate in this area which, although not as strong as mine, sits a little bit higher and is thus less likely to touch (never mind the extra clearance from the short wheelbase).

Also, my plate will not fit as is, but can easily be modified to fit. The holes that the hooks hook into, are in a slightly different place.
