reviving an old thread,

So had my clutch replaced in March this year.

When i got my patrol back, there seemed to be a slight shuddering, only when slowing down; essentially the last 5 or 10 meters when approaching a stop street or traffic light before as you come to a complete stop.

I mentioned this to the mechanic, thought it may have something to do with the clutch having just being replaced. In any event, the patrol was taken to mozambique and back, and having driven it most of the year, the shudder seemed to mostly go away, or at least not be considerable enough to cause worry.

Picked up the Patrol today after a visit to the same mechanic. Routine maintenance, primarily on the engine. Driving back to sandton from Hatfield, and as i slow down at the lights at the sandton offramp, kuh-klah kuh-klah kuh-klah... the same shudder is back, only this time considerably worse.

The following is now a more detailed description of it:
1. it's happens only a really low speed, the last few meters before a complete stop is reached
2. it happens with and without the clutch depressed (fully)
3. I can see the gear stick moving with each "kuh-klah"
4. I can feel the movement through my left foot (which is on the clutch)
5. it happens most noticeably when in second gear and in neutral and the clutch depressed
6. I have not tried it in reverse. i would so it's essentially absent in 3rd 4th or 5th
7. I have not tried when in 4x4 mode.

I'm taking it back to the mechanic tomorrow. I mentioned the noise the time after he replaced my clutch, but it didnt seem like too much of an issue (i initially thought maybe my brake disks were slightly warped).

I went past a mechanic friend of mine to take him for a drive. He mentioned something about it being the 2nd gear spring/bearing something or other (i know very little about gearboxes). What i do know is that if it is it's going to be a major job

my patrol did not do anything like this before the clutch was replaced. Given the gearbox has to be moved when doing the replacement, is it possible to damage the gearbox internals when doing so?

My patrol is only 150kkm young.. i am not expecting the gearbox to cause any problems so early?

Pulling away and driving my patrol is going like a dream.

Any thoughts or ideas?

It Was properly tightened as part of the service ( at my request) and was also adjusted during the clutch replacement. Must be this. Hope it is just this!

I suspect the handbrake is the problem.

Apparently the problem occurs with land rovers as well, and they have the same handbrake system.

The gearbox issue Dave is experiencing is, in my opinion, directly linked to the handbrake.
Like LR, the Patrol handbrake is is a drum brake located on the back of the transfer case, and locks up the driveline when administred, not the rear drum brakes/discs as per Toyota etc, although im sure you all know this already. If the brake is incorrectly adjusted (read - overtightened), the pads will drag on the drum which is most noticeable at low speed or when stopping, causing reverse thrust as the momentum of the vehicle continues to the final stop, and slowing as it does. A violent knocking and stopping sensation is felt through the gearbox,pedals, and seat.

I assume Dave's mechanic overtightened the handbrake and this is a subsequent byproduct of that.

Possible damage to pads and drum (ie: gouged pads and out-of-round drum as well as hot spots) can occur, but first port of call is to just re-set hand brake tension and gauge weather the handbrake still holds the vehicle on the hills.
