I think he has had enough of cars overheating pipes bursting ect ect i will buy that 3l and put a td42t in there but is gonna be a heap of money if you get the patrol for 50 k you gonna battle to finish the project for under 150 k

Sorry, I missed the "project" part in your text.
I also missed that the engine has said its farewells already.
Then surely the 1999 4.5 is a better buy?

The first Patrol is actually the exact Patrol I sold on the forum about a year ago...... not sure exactly why he is selling but doesnt sound like there is anything wrong with it
I quite like the zd30 and I thing its worth buying and fixing it. I think the zd30 got a bad name which it does not deserve.
I will bet that if tou have a madman system on a zd30, you will not break that engine

4.5 if in a "good" condition really can be a very good bargain - agreed.
Just think all that black smoke has affected my brain

, I like dem damn diesels
Would be best to actually get a knowledgeable person to check out that engine, I remember on my 280 Isuzu it used a lot of oil on a long trip, was told I would need to replace/overhaul engine 20K

, spoke to someone that knows Isuzu's, changed the type of oil and problem solved..., so always wonder how badly an engine is really damaged it could be totally kaput or maybe just need a few things fixed

Lots of good ideas and input. thanks all.
But, having owned a vehicle with an engine conversion I want to have the standard motor in the vehicle.
I imagine it will be a month or two so before I have sold the BMW and the Pajero and have cash to make a purchase. When I do I will have it checked out by Graham first and get advice here.
I have that pajero running reliably now - except for the broken sideshaft that is - but it was expensive and frustrating to get it to this point. I love my pajero and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, but the engine is just too strong for the drivetrain. This is the second sideshaft I have broken!
I have also learned that if you start with engine modifications, you open up a whole new can of risk parameters as far as reliability is concerned.
so, no project vehicles for me. I am looking at patrols because I want a combination of reliability and offroad capability and from what I've read and heard, the patrol is the shizz!
