Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hey Everyone :)

Thank you for all the advice and info... Ok. so this is what has happened in the mean time....

1. The car went into the Auto Electricians. They traced the source of the Short... A wire was caught between the engine and chassis?????? They say this is probably due to major work being done (i.e. clutch - sneaky hey) So that is fixed, but i still drive with spare fuses...

2. The rough idling. Car went in for its 140k service, the guys that did it, said wrong spark plugs and gaps (funny, mechanic that did clutch, etc said same thing) ... So spark plugs and gaps redone in past 2000km's.... She still rough idles.

3. I will read through the url that Mrowka sent and send car in for testing / checking for the shudder.

4. Dyno Day... See you all there with my not so happy Nissan Patrol.... Is there anyone here going? That is willing to take it for a drive and compare to theirs ??? pretty please ... asb..Oom :)

I have decided to buy a new car.... And use this to drive to work and back with, leave the Patrol at home and only take it into the bush and on little holidays... So i am going to spend the time and effort fixing it, with not so high mileage on a daily basis (i do about 120kms a day to work and back. Also new car will have to take me to the construction sites :( )


Anything else you guys suggest?

If you have the time and patience, you can get your Patrol to the point where it is bombproof-reliable. But keeping spare fuses on hand is never a bad idea.

I spent R 4,100 for a clutch, pressure plate and thrust bearing from Nissan. Amasingly they had stock. It is an absolute must that the fly wheel get skimmed.Prior to the replacement I had excessive clutch juddering in first and second gear. Pressure plate was %$##%%^.

Ok, So Clutch is fine. Apparently the shudder is because of the power issue and the rough idling???

Philippines are better than I expected. Lots of Patrols here too, more than Cruisers.

Have you managed to put a hose clamp on yet and has it made any difference to that rattle? (I only realised when I was half way home that I had cable ties in my toolbox and we could have made a plan right there, sorry)
Looking at your dyno graphs, you can clearly see the dip in torque between 2000 and 3000RPM. Take these along when trying to find somebody who can tell you what is wrong.

I have been thinking about your reliability concerns. There are lots of people who use Patrols in areas where vehicle breakdowns are potentially lethal, and in all countries except SA and Namibia the petrol engined Patrols have a name for reliability equal to or better than that of any other vehicle, including the Cruiser. The problems you have experienced are due to bad maintenance or sloppy work. Losing confidence in the Patrol for this reason is akin to being angry at your mother because she didn't walk to the doctor herself after falling and breaking her leg

Anyway I think most of that should be sorted now.

Glad you are seemingly enjoying it :) What is the weather like out there? You enjoying the food?

I have put a clamp on, and to no avail, vibration noise still there :p
I will be taking my car to SAC in Kyalami, they work on the Petrol side :)

I totally understand what you saying, but understand that I treat my car like gold. If i feel something is wrong, it goes in immediately for check up. It has been taken to Nissan for most of its repair and servicing, etc. But clutch, last service and electrical repair was elsewhere. It is when I strayed from Nissan that all of this has happened, however in saying that, since I took it back to Nissan to figure out what the issues are, they are unable to assist. They have no idea. (how bizarre). So will take it to SAC and see what they say.

You need to understand that me losing confidence in my vehicle is by no means an outlook on all Patrols. It's on MY vehicle.
I drive too many different construction sites all over the country in very remote areas, so I need to be super safe when I do this, as well as I live in farm lands, so roads are quiet and dark, i need to be safe, so losing confidence in my vehicle when I spend so much time money and effort in looking after it, is well, just that..

The electrical seems to be sorted :) I have confidence in the fact that the people that worked on it (They came recommended) did a proper job.

As for the dip and rough idle, as I said, will take it to SAC Kyalami.
