Gentlemen, thanks for all the advise etc.
Jules and Clem, I don't know exactly how I broke it. For the first two years of my ownership, I struggled badly with overheating, and also had an incorrectly-calibrated temperature sender installed. In the process I boiled the car several times, and even though this was solved a couple of years ago, I must believe that this was probably the root cause.
Now as several of you know, my job is designing pressure vessels. As a consequence, I have very little faith in stitch-weld repairs, and just slightly more in impregnation. However, of the mechanics I spoke to, all have had more bad than good experience with repaired heads.
As a consequence, I am not going to go down that path.
Alex, I have a lot of respect for the Lexus motor. But I still maintain that this engine is not an ideal fit in a Patrol (unless the low ratio is changed as well). But I believe that to do such a complex change will cost me more than my car is worth. As such, I don't want to go down that path, and even if I wanted to, I can't afford it.
Cedric, you won't believe that I actually gave very serious thought to that option. Although normally aspirated rather than turbo. But these engines are very scarce and also fairly expensive when you do find one.
The best price I have thus far been able to find for a new head is about R8550.00. Add to that probably another R4k for gaskets, rings and main bearings...
However, I have found a 4.5 engine, and am about to open negotiations.
I intend fitting the carburettor from my 4.2 onto this, has anybody tried this? Anybody know of any issues?

Thank you for the detailed post Peter. I hope you find the right solution.

Sal more na werk gou gaaan kyk.

Hi Peter,
Sorry to hear of your troubles. I agree that repairing the head would not inspire confidence. When you are out deep in the gamadoolas the last thing you need is that nagging thought in the back of your mind that you are taking a chance because some aspect of your van is known not to be 100%. I love my 4.2D turbo, but your 4.5 idea also sounds like a good plan.
Good Luck, hope you are back up and running again soon.
Ross

Thanks gentlemen.
The only issues with putting the 4.5 in that I am aware of at this stage are getting the ignition to work, and that I will have to add an electronic fuel pump?
