This relates to an earlier thread I strated on self maintenance of our vehicles.
I think there is real merit in a practical and vehicle specific training for Patrol forum members. At least there is for me. Reading the theory is not enough for me to then just go and do it myself. I need to do it with a coach standing nearby. I.e. we all open up the wheel bearings on our respecticive vehicles while the coach passes between us to see how we are doing!
I also think there is merit is checking these things throughly before going on trips rather than to go on the trips and then taking everything with just in case. So e.g. my universal joint on the prop shaft may be worn. I check and replace it first, rather than having to carry a spare iniversal in the ammo-boxes.

Peter, woud you consider facilitating this? (Of course not for free) We can split it into modules. E.g. One or two Saturdays are arranged for the wheel bearings module!

Ps: Im thinking about rather taking my truck to JB's Auto here (cruiser Whisperer Johan Meyer) , as i believe he would do a better job than the Dealership. Only thing though is that i heard the cruiser bearings need twice as much re-torque, is there anyone that can confirm the similarities or differences between Cruiser and Patrol, it would make it easier for me / him.

Yes. Troll is not a daily driver and the Navara doea the weekend camping trip duty. Troll is my baby and I look after him. Most people tell me I waiste money by servicing so regularly. I would rather spend the money and have a great holiday, than brake down and miss half my holiday.

Guys, unfortunately the workshop has limited capacity, so we really only have room to do one vehicle.

But if we keep the group reasonably small, everybody will have good opportunity to see and even "feel"?

Further, I am not a qualified mechanic, and am mostly self-learned. I am quite happy assisting with those things I understand fairly well, but there are areas (particularly on the newer cars) that I do not have adequate knowledge/experience on, and there are other forum members who know these vehicles much better?

Russ, will it help if we take photos and maybe a video? Can we distribute it somehow?

Peter, I only read this thread now. That name rang a bell. My goodness the world is a small place. I sold my Honda '89 160i to him back in 2001!

Maybe at our next Patrol GTG at 3 Provinces we should have a mechanical workshop demonstration for a few hours and specifically look at general issues that are common om Patrols, I know for me it will be the rubber seals in the brake caliphers and wheelbearing cleaning.
