JG has just informed my that LAZARUS has been written off!!

The body is in perfect condition and might need new carpets and front seats. Mechanically the engine and gearbox might have a problem because of the fire.

M&F wants R49 000-00 for the Patrol - is there anybody that is interested in buying LAZARUS? JG only has time till the 3rd of Jan 2011 to get the Patrol from the insurance before they send it to the scrapyard.

Please let me know if your are interested and I will contact JG in Mozambique.

I am back from a fantastic 15 days in Mozambique. Lots of sunshine...spearfishing was very good and no further trouble along the way.

Although this is a Patrol forum, I want to react on Koos and Jules' remark regarding the D3. I did my trip in a D3 TDV6 SE with 37500km on the clock with my heavy 4x4 trailer in tow and 4 adults inside. The Disco went realy well and I can understand why many drivers love the car. However the Disco is not my car. I do not think it is the car as such, but rather a JG thing. The following observations are top of my list:

Positives:

1. Very responsive engine with lots of power for it's size. The auto gearbox is smooth and compliments the engine very well.
2. Fuel consumption: Open road from Pretoria to Kosi bay and back...on the dot 8km/l. Off road, mainly deep sand, with trailer and seperately over a distance of approximately 260km...5,1km/l. I thought that this was good for the performance.
3. The suspension is awsome in deep sand, especially in those worn out deep donga areas on the dune roads. The inflatable suspension operates very well.
4. On the way back the Disco went into limp mode for about 1 min. At first I was disgusted until I realised that it might be as a result of EGT control. Although the EGT reading is not visible inside on the panel, I believ the D3 has a monitoring system which protects the car from this well known turbo diesel problem. If only the Patrol 3.0Di had such a system, I think many of them would still have been around.

Negatives:

1. Turbo lagg in the deep sand at crutial moments, especially with the trailer in tow. This however is nothing different from any other turbo diesel I know.
2. The flippen pommies can not count futher than 45. With the raised suspension in deep sand, I was restricted to 45km/h. This is frustrating especially when the tracks are hard and fast but the "middelmanntjies" is to high for a lowered suspension.
3. I picked-up a few general design irritations such as the small-ish display panel for all the settings and readings. As soon as a setting is selected, the panel space is restricted and very little other information is available. The GPS is simply poor. The spare wheel release mechanism underneath the folded jump seats is foolish, especially when the bay is loaded. The abundant plastics inside is somewhat of a downturn too.
4. All the electronic management systems turns me down.
5. Lastly, the reliability goast was always with me. This is a very subjective observation and my mind may be influenced by two main factors namely the fact that the car did not belong to me and I was very alert not to damage the car and secondly the fact that it is turbo diesel, an engine which lost my trust in general. On the way back the engine started to run rough and uneven only when idling. It is still like that and LR will fix it tomorrow.

All in all the car goes fantastic. Unfortunately the JG inside does not associate the D3 with rugget 4x4 driving.

What car for me next....... My favourite 4x4 car of them all will remain a Patrol 4.8. Unfortunately I can not afford a late model 4.8 right now (the only option I will excersize if possible). I bought a 2000 model Land Cruiser (105) GX 4500 EFI manual with SFA, replacement bullbar, 9.5t winch, OME, Airtech snorkel, frontrunner roofrack, outback pack system, dual battery system, leather seats, service record with Toyota...from a friend who never realy used it off-road. The car is in a spotless condition. It will have to serve my purpose untill I can afford my late model 4.8. OK...ok...shoot me if you like. I will stay on this forum because THE FORUM MEMBERS ARE FANTASTIC, THE PATROL REMAINS MY NO1 4X4 AND NE DAY I WILL DRIVE MY OWN PATROL AGAIN. Meanwhile I will open a thread under markeplace for many accesories and patrol equipment I have for sale, such as my outback roofrack, safari snorkel, radios, jump seats etc.

Regards
JG

JG, interesting comments in the D3, think I am with you there. Congrats on the Cruiser. Drove one for a year and loved it to bits. Power not in the league of the 4.8 but a lovely car. If it had the power of a 4.8 I would have difficulty choosing between the two. Hope the 4.8 is not too far in the future

Hello JG

Have you been able to determine exactly what went wrong, or why the fire started? Also, are you going to show us some pictures of your new toy or is that against forum protocol?

Regards
Peter

As far as I am concerned, you have been one of the prime contributors here and will always be welcome on this site. Please show us pictures of your Crooza. Perhaps you could also have a look at the LCCSA forum. There are also some great members there and a fantastic knowledge base is on hand.

Do you perhaps have seat covers that you would like to get rid of? If so, could I please have the first option?
