Thanks Cedric

Appreciate the welcome, as well as the wise words. Also saved to my records regarding the service contact!

As Peter mentioned earlier, the Y61 Patrol is the kind of beast that has enough electronics to keep you on the road, but not enough to drop you in the ____ if something goes wrong. The Y62 on the other hand is an entirely different beast, and with the FJ being a more modern vehicle the Y62 will compete alongside the FJ. The Y61 Patrol will take you into anywhere and get you out the other side. There is almost a ton weight difference between the Patrol and the FJ, that's probably just the weight of the Patrols solid front diff....haha... but it will have a very different ride feel to your FJ.

100 000Km on a Patrol means it has just run in. Servicing a Patrol is easy to do yourself, or as mentioned there are a few guys in the Cape who can do it for you. I know Frans Fourie in Bellville, as he helped me rebuild my motor myself up in Jhb with valuable information sometimes late in the evening. and I had to visit him and let him tinker a little with my Iron Maiden when I've drove down to visit my folks in the Cape. That man knows his stuff, and bigger gentleman you will never meet.

So... Sell the FJ and come on over to the fun side.

Mine isn't the water one - I do know which one you are referring to though. Mine is black with massive 285 Mud Terrains - usually dirty from some trail or another :)

Thanks for the list. Saved to my records.

How's it Kyle!

So there is a few other things to consider. I have driven both Y61 Patrols and FJC's a lot, both on and off-road. They are both super capable vehicles.

There is an advantage to the FJ on the road, being front independent suspension. It does drive better.

I have been on dunes in both vehicles, and there is not much difference except the A-Trac gets you out of trouble easier.

Other off-road conditions I would kind of swing more to Patrol here. It's articulation is better, as pointed out. I have noticed that the idling speed in 1st Low-range on the Fj is slower than the Patrol, if that is helpful or not.

Lastly, and this is the deal breaker for me personally is the space. Patrol is much more spacious with good visibility all round, especially the rear. The back seats in the FJ are claustrophobic and have hardly any visibility. Also the fact that rear doors can only be opened when front doors are open are annoying to me.

Welcome Kyle!!

The FJ is probably one of the best "out the box" units you can buy for the dunes if you compare it stock to other vehicles and I think the weight is the biggest advantage.

35" tyres fit easy to a Patrol with only a 2" lift and does not rub anywhere, but on a 4.8 it robs quite allot of power.

If you ever buy one and have the extta bucks to spend, do a turbo conversion and you will have a beast of note. Dune climbing will be fun and games. The 4.8 is e very very tough engine and the standard internals are strong enough to handle more then 3 times the standard power

Hi Kyle!

Welcome... Patrol is the way to roll :mytwocents:

My dad bought 2.8 petrol Station wagon in 1985. It still runs smoothly.

I have a 4.2 diesel (Y61) which Michael converted into an intercooled turbo. Just love it... (I would actually like to own a GQ, a 4.2 diesel bakkie, a 4.8 and a Y62 as well. But allas, not enough "time" to drive them all  )

Hope you find the car that suits your pocket and exceeds your expectations!
