I have VHF and UHF handheld with magnet mount on the Patrol. And a spare hand held for anyone travelling with me. Never considered the 10m band as it seems there are too few people using it.

I also have my ham radio license, but I have never had use for it for convoy / 4x4 comms.

Agree, but the HAM tools makes life so much easier. My radio is programmed for the Gauteng HAM repeaters and ORRA frequencies.
Also easy to program for a specific convoy frequency if you know all the detail on the radio itself without having to link a laptop to the radio.....

Oelie, as a radio ham you should know that UHF is for talking to planes and 29 MHz is only for people who miss their CB radios! :rolling:

PS: A handheld VHF radio costs the same as a Bosvark, and the annual license fees are negligible via 4x4 Community Forum or ORRA...

Airband is for talking to planes, VHF airband uses the frequencies between 108 and 137 MHz; ORRA VHF frequencies around 160Mhz and UHF frequencies are 400 to 470Mhz.

I use a Kirisun DP 405 handheld and a Hytera MD 655 mobile radio with a Zara 40 antenna. Both radios are Digital Migration Radios and work very well in digital mode on the ORRA frequencies. The comms in digital mode is crystal clear.
