Friction is NOT the same as traction.

And tread pattern etc. is much more of a factor in noise than width is.

But, unlike me, you have power and weight. I only have weight.

I would also like to add that increased friction is a good thing... friction is the same as traction...

I am leaning to wide. The patrol is heavy and I tow a caravan in sand so weight distribution on a big footprint is good.

I think the marie biscuits work well on lighter vehicles like Defenders...

When can I get a good price on tryes?

I can get barend to sharpen his pencil but on what size ....the narrow or wide ones?

When I think of noise i am thinking of the same tyre but different widths... so all else equal wider tyres will generate more noise.

The wide. I have made up my mind... sort of. Cheapest I have found is:

305/70R16 R4734 installed.
285/75R16 R4589 installed.

After encountering a lot of bridges on my travels, that were just logs tied together, I was pleased I had wide tires at the time as I felt that thin ones were more likely to slip into the sometimes wide cracks between the logs. i’ve had 255/85r16’s on two of my patrols, currently got 285/75r16 on the 4.5
i would not hesitate to fit 255/85r16 when buying tyres again. much better allround size in my opinion.
defnately better in sand and mud.
