Thanks Tinus. Never occurred to me to try brake cleaner. I have a couple of cans at home and so will use one.

Interesting. I wouldn't have expected hand marks and a small bit of oil to cause steering shimmy.

Just thinking about it, it cannot be castor – steering wheel still self-centres perfectly well on a straight road.
