Or just buy a 4.2 Diesel N/A and never worry about EGT's, common rail issues,Turbo failures, cracked heads and pistons, never constantly watching gauges so that when you want to go up a hill fast you cant anyways, never worry about chipping, mapping or any other electrical issues.
Just put diesel in it and drive from here to there, and then from there back to here. and repeat.
haha
Only drawback is arriving 25mins behind the rest of the convoy after a 8 Hour drive. But thats lekker cause the braai is always lit when you get there.

PS: I would happily purchase the 4.2D N/A (TD42), the 4.2D turbo intercooled (TD42ti), or the 3.0D turbo intercooled 3.0 (CRD 3.0).
I know Stefan and another on this forum has achieved very reliable returns from their ZD30 patrol, and achieved high milage without issues at all, as have many thousands of folk in Australia and Europe alike, however, law of averages dictates that these motors were not as reliable as the above mentioned motors,...so if i had a choice of a Diesel Nissan Patrol i would chose from the above 3 i mentioned. If anything, they will most likely have the lesser milage when compared to the ZD30 due to the timeline of introduction to our market.

As all will tell you -- i am FOR the 3.0 Diesel Patrol. I had two ZD 30 Nissan [Patrol and a Hard Body] The Hard Body NEVER had an engine failure [heat problems once because of a water hose closing up on torque]
The Patrol did hand granade on me BUT it could have been prevented. [Nissan dealer diagnosing it with a faulty computer]
But .. if you can afford the later model Patrol with the CRD engine [which replaced the ZD 30 ] THEN the 3.0 Di is by far the better buy [and we will advise you how to take care of it .. once you found your dream wheels
en daazy -- nou issik KLAAR Ingils geneekt vir lang tyd

Thanks for the welocome messages everybody, I already feel quite at home on this forum. It seems that my hunting is going to take longer than just buiyng the first one I see but I look forward to owning my own Patrol.
just thinking laterally here, but If I had the finances to buy another Patrol, I would quite like to buy the 3.0 diesel. But...... I would want it running, and at a VERY good price especially if it is the older ZD30 motor. I would then open up the motor and do a full check on everything inside. If there is nothing wrong and all the internals look good, then it will cost you a head gasket and labour.... ( cheap compared to having a motor blow up on you ). If the pistons or anything needs replacing, Its going to be cheaper to fix than if the block and head is damaged by broken pistons etc. ( again cheaper than having a motor blow up )...... Thereafter, you know that you have a "brand new" motor that you can do the NADS protection to that will last you a looooooooong time !!!
Welcome Edward,
It doesn't matter what PATROL you buy, just get one
My preferred one would be the 4.8 auto, but depending on budget and purpose. My 4.5 is very economical..i fiil up once every 6months unless I go on holiday but like every other Patrol owner from way back when, its always been THIRSTY

This is a valid point, and yes I monitor many things on my engine. For me its worth it as the N/A 4.2D is not the vehicle you take to a drag race and Tinus might agree after he has driven mine.
One thing is for sure.....with great power comes great responsibility
Hallo almal,
jis ricster ek gooi ook maar die ingels net onder dwang, Afrikaans kry altyd voorkeur. Ek het my Patrol gekry!! Dis toe nie een van die diesels nie maar die 4.2 petrol. Ek hoor by almal hulle is maar dors maar hy sal doen so vir eers. Baie groot planne vir later, watch this space. Dalk 4.2 turbo intercooled something along the lines of the Nissan Cabstar 40?
