And then of course nobody local has meaningful experience with the new BF A/T yet...

They had other brands (BF's, Duelers, ?) and now had the Coopers. I follow them and their work closely and I'm totally convinced that they are experts in real (practical) terms what a tire under immense terrain and pressure goes through and which is the best in these extreme circumstances. Obviously there are a lot of brands and new tires come out all the time and they can't drive all of them at the same time - but yea, from their experience it definitely puts Coopers right up there (for me) for the tire of choice when doing a really hectic overland trip. If you lose a couple of the cheaper tires along the way it will in any case cost you more - and that not only money wise.

But for the general "part time" offroaders (and experts ) it is where personal taste, price and the other comes into play.

Is comes down to sidewalls in the end; mtr goodyear, bf muds and a t cooper sst/st max are all good but the stmaxx has the most versatile tread patten inmho

Please don't get me wrong, i am not knocking the Coopers. But i remember reading that BFG reckon their new AT's will get something like 70% more mileage than their previous AT if used exclusively off-road.

That's a massive claim that needs to be proven!
