Ian - here goes my guessin [Nooooooooooo Grant .. NOT Gassing :-) ]
1) Amp on car battery too low
2) Dirty battery poles
3) Loose earth
4) grease on the arms of th elocking mechanism gooed up
the also, the bushes wear out in time .. so maybe just upen the door panel & check .. have some ELECTRO KLEEN ready and check where tha cabl between door & harness connect .. cleean that up.
A new battery in the .remote sometimes help

Jurie,
I'd suggest manually locking the car with the keys. It's central locking, so all locks should lock / unlock when the vehicle is locked manually from the driver's side. If this works, it is definitely not a mechanical issue. If it does not work, I'd assume there is some technical issue with the central locking system. I would check the door switches (the switches which determine whether the door is open or not), power supply & ground to the door lock actuators or the door locak actuators themselves.
If it is possible to lock the doors centrally from the driver's side lock, there is probably not a mechanical issue. It might help to re-pair the remote with the vehicle.
Unfortunately, I don't have a Patrol manual (yet), so I'm unsure as to the procedure to follow to re-key the remote with the vehicle. It may be similar to the Hardbody, and the following details this process:
1: Get into the vehicle and close all doors.
2: Insert and remove the key into the ignition more than six times in ten seconds.
3: Put key into lock and turn to ACC position.
4: Push either button on the remote once. The hazard lights will flash twice. If you want to add an additional remotes, press the button on additional remotes now as well. The hazard lights will flash twice each time a remote is added. A maximum of four remotes can be programmed with the vehicle.
5: Open driver's door.
Not sure if that would work on the Patrol (as mentioned - no manual), so use at your own risk.
Hope it helps.
Ian
Edit
PS: Yes - also what Oom Mac says. Try using liberal amounts of electroclean on the locks and similar as well.

Thanks Ian. The doors open and lock normally using the keys manually and the inside "all doors lock" works fine. I will try your key re-set recipe and report back.
My posts column shows that I never thank anybody for their advice and that looks really selfish. The problem is that I don't know what app to hit to show an official thanks on the Forum.

I also purchased a new remote shell from the dealers but the switches themselves were also gone. After a bit of searching I managed to find replacement switches (from RS Components, I suppose Communica will have them too) say around R15 a switch - they are called
tactile switches and I chose the gold plated contact type, good for 200 000 operations. Because they came in a set of 10, I have some left - it is easy to install if you have some (fine) soldering skills.
If you have the same problem and are not up to fine surface mount soldering, I am willing to help out - while stocks last and provided you get the remote to me and collect - or have a chat while it gets soldered in.

Sure Stefan! PM your address and I'll pop them in the post.
I'll search a bit for the part number, if I recall the chap at the spares counter found the part number of a Sentra?
