Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Had the same thing on my car (4.8) the last few days - heard it when driving a long a little dirt track here. After reading this thread, engaged 4wd, drove a few meters, disengaged and reversed until I could clearly hear both hubs unlock - noise gone. I had obviously previously not properly disengaged the hubs.

Interesting to see that the machines have a transmission brake.

Thanks Peter. Maybe that explains why its not a very good handbrake.

It has a separate set of brake shoes in the rear disks they work very well until you drive in low range with handbrake half up ....all manaul patrols has it on the prop just not sure of 44.8 with clutch

Just keeping this thread updated. I have battled with the hand break the last few months. After adjustment it works for a while, then starts binding and squeaking again. Adjust and repeat... very annoying.

Pulled it apart last night, checked with marker paint inside drum... drum is Oval! Sent drum and shoes for skimming and lining. Hopefully will reassemble next weekend. Let's see if this solves the problem.

manual 4.8's hand brake works the same as 4.8 auto, brake shoes and drum for hand brake on both rear wheels. Central prop shaft brake is great - can make it effectively a 4 wheel hand brake but only works if both wheels on the rear (or front if 4x4 hubs locked) is on the ground and have traction. (if diff is locked then one wheel traction is fine)

With the colder weather I've noticed my rh free wheel hub was acting up, normally after a stop then all is normal.

Michael did a great post on servicing the freewheel hubs. But I personally doubt a noise like that from the hubs or propshaft id still think brakes and discs. What pads where installed? And also where the wear indicators installed correctly?

Hot drums tend to pull if they are left engaged. I am wondering if at some point the handbrake was over-adjusted such that it rubbed while driving?

Peter, yes, that would be my guess. I've had issues with the hand break since I bought the Patrol just over a year ago. I think it's all related. After every service the thing gets adjusted too tight. I adjust it down and alls good for a while. I think either in that over adjustment time or by PO the drum was overheated.
