Just been through this on my GL Petrol. All the wiring is there with the plugs. If you want to go with the standard installation you will need the tank, the piping, a fuel pump, the sub tank switch that goes into the dash (lhs of the radio) and the control unit that plugs in behind the dash (just behind and above the diff lock switch). You may also want the petrol guage that shows the sub tank level and I have not checked whether the connections are there.
I went sweet and simple. The tank and piping was there. Had Graham upgrade the pump to higher capacity (He mounts it correctly so that it does not vibrate off) and I wired a illuminated rocker switch via a relay to the pump. Simple but effective.

I get 6.2-5.5 km/l depends on how the wind blows and how in a hurry I am.

That is between 750-840 km. This is highway driving only. I have not tested this yet. Normally I will fill up somewhere or I will do so 4x4 driving.
On another topic, check your fuel pump pressure also. It should be 3.5 bar. It seems, or that is what a local mechanic told me, that there is a problem with the standard fuel pump. The correct fuel pressure make a huge difference.

didn't all the 4.5 GL's come out with the standard 35L sub tank?? My two cents worth

I would go with the standard Nissan tank I have had sub tanks build for some of my Landies and they all at some point have given problems. Drove some hellish corrugated roads this last weekend (rattle out your fillings type!!) not one drop of Petrol leaked and no rattles on the patrol when I hit the black top again. Have just finished building my off road trailer that can now carry 140L of fuel so now I can still out run Cedric and still have enough fuel to get home

All the 4,5 GL Petrol's that I looked at had no sub tank. The one I bought had a 65 l aftermarket tank. The GRX's had sub tank's (I think 45 l). The GL however uses the same wiring loom as the GRX so any of the goodies on the GRX can be fitted to the GL.

Well then I am one lucky bugger with a standard factory fitted sub-tank fitted to my GL.

I have a suspicion that the sub tank was an extra that could be ordered. I see some GL diesels have the sub tank and some don't. I have also seen this on the petrol versions, when I was looking at buying a petrol Patrol a few years back.
I would like to do this, as mine didn't come out with the sub tank. However one of the previous owners fitted a 65L S/S tank with pump that is used to carry water to a tap under the Patrols rear bumper. 65 L of water is a bit much so would prefer to adapt this tank to carry diesel, and fit a 40 odd litre S/S tank on the opposite side ( after re-routing the exhaust to run parallel to the propshaft ).
Can one just change the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster to the gauge with the subtank indicator, obviously after getting the relevant computer box ( the one by the difflock switch as mentioned by someone), as mine already has the Sub-tank switch fitted below the rear window de-fogger switch?

Cedric you need the sub-tank gauge on the cluster for every thing to talk to each other; had a chat with dawid this morning and the sub-tank the pump and control unit goes for about 2.5k then you need a speedo cluster with a gauge, will a 30l one work in your car?

Not sure Tinus, would be nice if just that gauge could come out and be replaced with the multi gauge. I already have the tank, and I doubt if the sub tank can be fitted on the opposite side ( propshaft space ), so specially made tank would need to be made.
If just the gauge could be changed, and the relevant computer boxes could be added ( assuming the wiring harness is the same between the GL and GLX ) without too much change to the original instrument cluster then that would be sweet.
But I think an inline diesel pump plumbed into the main tank filler pipe, possibly using the existing Sub Tank switch in the dash to activate it will work just fine for me too.
Hmmmm..... 95L + 65L ..... bring your trailer Ian....hahaha.... I'm then able to crack over the 1000km mark, without stopping to fill up off the trailer

Cedric - If you have the switch you probably have the control unit - check behind the diff lock switch as it sits there. All you will then need is the pump and the guage. The plug for the pump should be sitting above the back of your water tank. Looking at the wiring diagram in Haynes (which has been 100% for everything I have looked up so far) the guage should not be necessary. If subtank is empty you will hear the pump even over loud music.
