Cheaper Snorkels

I got one of these cheapies from 4x4direct too for my Pathfinder about 18 months back. At R1750 to my door I don't care if it lasts 5 years...basically its identical to a Safari snorkel just without the Safari print. Materials feel the same. Ordering the Patrol one later this week before rand slips more

Would never consider one of these. Its not just about the UV etc but also the fitting/finish, and the connections inside the engine bay. No other snorkel manufacturer has better connection and piping than Safari. One must also look at the diameter of the snorkel and internal surface structure as this can restrict the air flow.

Hi Chaps,

Just an update. I purchased two snorkels, after STRESSING to the supplier on numerous occasions that it is for the pick-ups & not for the suv I was assured that the ones I was being sent will fit. Needless to say my fears were realised when they arrived as I could see straight out the box that the interface between the snorkel & the air intake were not going to mate up together. I enquired about an installation manual & I was told all the pdf documents had been lost & I was given a link of a fellow Patrol driver that had documented the installation step by step but on a SUV, 4.8 if I am not mistaken. This was helpful but the intake on the 4.2 diesel pickup is very different to the 4.8 petrol SUV where in counts. The geometry of the bodies are the same so the snorkels are essentially identical except for the section connecting to the engine intake. After personally looking for more info & sending the supplier a long email explaining what I needed more info on, I was totally ignored & have yet to receive a reply to my email. I guess they figured if they ignored me the problem would go away, well there plan worked. I took matters into my own hands & designed & manufactured an adapter which slots in to marry up the snorkel to the air intake. I have fitted one of them & it really looks the part, really happy with it. Basically what I am saying is that if anybody is planning to fit one of these snorkels to a pick up & you face a similar problem to me, give me a shout, I have the design for the adapter documented & filed if anyone needs it.

Just for the record, the supplier was NOT 4x4direct. Another top tip for fellow DIY enthusiasts, do not rely 100% on the templates, they are not always 100% correct, measure 10 times, cut once. I made a slight adjustment to my template after measuring numerous times & it turns out I was correct in my tweaking.

The first "cheap" snorkel I baught was also a dudd .. from a guy calling hisself 'Bruce' - That was the last - I threw it away and got my next snorkels from 4x4 Direct .. and Pieter has not let me down yet. Ther is a BIG difference in the quality of the 4x4 Direct snorkels and the other R1900 snorkels.

Oh -- and Pieter [Pietpetoors started his 4x4 'life' in a NISSAN .. a Terrano he only went over after he moved to the W P
