Ross,

This diff guy in the ad is not too far from me. As soon as get my Lorrie back(getting a new windshield for R550), I can go have a look for you.

I'll try and get as much info for you and maybe some more pictures.

I don't know too much about diffs, but will find out what I can.

Best will be to twist Peter Conan's arm to come with me, he knows a lot more than me and works around the corner from me, but apparently doesn't have a lot of internet access lately.

Will see what I can do.

Cheers

Hi Ross

Just checking before you spend money. Are you sure the diff is toast. You have mentioned "noises and vibrations".
If the diff is taken out already, is there any evidence other than the noises while driving that suggests it is damaged?
If not, once you put fresh oil in, as specified for that diff, why don't you check if the noise is still there?

@ Stephaansie: Many thanks for your very generous offer, if you do get an opportunity I would highly appreciate it. Hopefully some of the more technically clued up guys will be able to offer some guidance in terms of what to look for. I spoke to Morne (the Gumtree Poster) this morning, and am still hoping he will be able to find some record of the VIN number, or any other details of the vehicle that the diff comes from. He said he will come back to me later today or tomorrow, I`ll keep everyone updated when he gets back to me.

@ Alex: Yes, I did try with fresh oil before we pulled the diff, and unfortunately there was no change. I havn`t seen the diff personally since it has been pulled, but I am told that unfortunately there is clearly visible damage to the teeth.

I also don't know much about diffs, but If Andre can go have a look, I also don't mind chucking a few spanners in the Iron Maiden and opening up the diff to have a look on Saturday morning. If the owner of the diff doesn't mind !! Also If Peter can assist .... that would be brilliant.

I assume you only want the internals of that diff. I am hoping to come down to Stellenbosch, probably late Dec to early Jan. So if there is no urgency on the diff bits, I can bring them down for you.

Andre... Will you be able to get hold of Peter?

I also may be wrong on this, but I seem to remember hearing that Nissan kind of threw any diff onto the Y61's at some stage. So some had H260 and others had H233.

Hi Cedrick,

Thanks very much, much appreciated! Hopefully I`ll get some feedback in the next 24hrs from the seller that will indicate whether this option is worth pursuing further, or if its a dead end. Will let you know.

I think if the diff is correct, I`ll probably get it couriered down to me...my Trol is a daily driver so need to get it back up and running sooner rather than later! The novelty of having to either beg SWAMBO to use her car, or having to hire a car every time I need to get to a meeting is going to wear off pretty fast!!!

Cheers,

Ross

Manne,

IIRC, the H260 is the big diff with LSD, but still confused

Ross,

If I may be a bit blunt and straight forward...
Did your diff REALLY pack up or is someone trying to make money here? How much shavings and or flakes in the oil are we talking about? Maybe you could post a pic of the gears etc on here and let the Gurus have a look see.

Please forgive me if I step on someone's toes. I don't know the guys fixing the diff. I might be horribly wrong about their intentions.

I have a knack(?) of offending people by getting a second opinion on the said damaged goods and end up shooting myself in the foot. Then afterwards the price of fixing the thing looks a bit different. I just don't trust all of the specialists anymore.... But that's just me.

This is obvious your call. I'll gladly try and get to Morne this arvie and get more info on the diff...

I'll also phone Piet and see what's up.

Andre, let me know if you need a hand. I'm in Alberton, so can make a plan on Sat if need be. We are having Christmas function tomorrow, so will only check in on Friday morning here again

Ross, I replaced my rear locker with an ARB item a month or two ago. Same as yours - H233B on a '98 model 4.2 diesel.

The way I understand it is that the ARB locker replaces the complete diff with their bits & pieces. I have the old diff (with broken locker bits) at home - you're welcome to it...

yeah that could work !!... just one question, where the locker couples, is that not part of the gear...
