I am interested in the fuel saving effect of a snorkel. Is there really an improvement? has anyone really measured it properly. I see most of the adverts for snorkels are a bit shy when it comes to claiming improved fuel consumption.

Overdrive- there are more than one body importing these lower priced snorkels - Make sure you get one imported by PietPetoors [I got one of his for Lobo, and I got one from the "other guy' for Boezman ... piez of shiess merde akkies - the top fell off at 120 Kpu on gravel road, it crecked wide open.. BUT it is the fibregalss one, so I could have it fixed.
As for the "fuel saving" - Yes, it will save fuel in the long run - BUT you must discipline self - coz it gives more "surge & response" .. therefore you tend to press down more on that long flat paddle thingy under y'r right foot -- Refrain from that and it should use less fuel.
BUT will you save that R1800 + 360 postage + 600 installation costs in fuel?? At current rates -- in about 10 years time if you avg 20 000 Km per annum.

I have not noticed a significant fuel consumption reduction, but a friend of mine with a 4.8 claims quite a large improvement when driving in soft sand, IE when the engine is working hard for extended periods at low vehicle speeds.
So I agree with Oom Mac, don't buy it if you think it's going to save you money on fuel, but it might be worth it to extend your range in the dunes. However the tests my friend did were not done scientifically at all, so I would not be able to guarantee anything.
IMO, the only viable financial reason to buy a snorkel is as a sort of an engine insurance policy if you go places where you might have to do deep water crossings. Note also that a snorkel on any normal/current patrol s/w does not allow you to necessarily ford deeper water (the exception is the 4.2 Diesel) as the electronics become the limiting factor. But at least you will be able to drag it out and just dry it out, rather than having broken the engine.
