Try to put it is 1st and then in reverse - that is what I normally do!

There is a problem here that needs to be remedied. The box did not do this from new, rectify it the correct way for peace of mind. Unfortunately i am at a loss as to what it may be,so i cannot help in that regard. I would hate for one of our members to be stranded out in the bundu for something they knew to be the problem. (It just really sucks spending that little bit more after the initial capital outlay for the vehicle i understand.)
Please keep this thread updated as i am very interested in the outcome should you effect a repair.

Russ, if you look in the classifieds he is actually trying to sell the car now.

Hi,
Apologies for the lack of response, things have been somewhat busy on this side (amazing how much time a new family takes from you).
As Peter Mentioned, with regret, I have decided to sell the Patrol. Not because of the gearbox issue, but rather for practical purposes. I am not getting to do any off roading since the arrival of my daughter and the petrol consumption is very heavy for the purposes I am using it for (ie going to and from work and travelling on the occasional dust road). We are planning to downgrade to something lighter on fuel. I have huge respect for the beast, but I do not have the funds nor time to get the most out of it.
Regarding the gearbox idiosyncrasy, it is still there but I have gotten used to it. it now takes between 15 and 30 seconds to run through the permutations to find reverse again (once in a while, it takes longer). It is something which needs to be fixed, but it is a livable quirk. As mentioned before, it only occurs when driving a longish distance (seems like more than 15 kms) that causes the reverse idle to become misaligned.
