Hi Pieter,

Thanks for the heads up!

I`ve been busy with another vehicle project since the beginning of the year and havn`t been on the Patrol forum that much, so I hadn`t seen that thread. I`ll definitely add my name for the 24th....sounds like a plan!

Cheers,

R

To add my bit of info...I paid R1040 for the Nissan rear main seal i replaced when I did the clutch the week before last. Took 3 days to get to my local Nissan dealership from Nissan SA....a word of advice is that you should try asking for a discount as they usually give a 10% or more discount if you ask nicely. Seems they have stock again....on another side note a complete clutch replacement kit from Nissan will currently set you back R5500 (pressure plate, release bearing and friction plate). Which isn't too bad...the horror stories I'd heard before were like R10k for those parts!

Gentlemen

Studying the manual, it would appear as though some TD42's came equiped with a built-in oil cooler. This unit is fitted into a recess in the side of the block and transfers heat from the oil to the water in the cooling system.

The biggest advantage of this is that the cooler is very well protected against damage from foreign objects. The disadvantages are that there is a bigger cooling load on the radiator, and that the cooling medium is at a higher temperature and therefore les efficient.

Now it is obvious that some of the guys with turbo'd 4.2D's are having cooling problems, while some others aren't.

My question is: Is this perhaps the reason? Do the guys with problems have this unit fitted?

Can you post a picture from the manual that shows where it's mounted?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting.

I must go and have a closer look at my van and see if the fitting by the filters looks anything like that.

Cheers,

Ross

Thanks Peter! So it sits just above the oil filter mounts? Interesting stuff...

Gents if I read it correctly, it sits behind the air filters.

I suspect the only way to tell from the outside will be to see if the oil cooler relief valve is present, and perhaps the shape of the housing on which the oil filters are mounted?

Cheers

Ahhh....I see...it fits between the block and the filters. That's an interesting concept...

As one of my previous managers always used to say in his best Cockney accent: "clever chaps these Japanese".
