As a matter of interest, a guy here at work runs the Comrades. He reckons he gets about 1000km on a set of running shoes, which cost R1200/pair. This gives a "running cost" of R1.20/km. Compared to that I paid R2100/tire for my 33*12.5*15 BFG A/T's. That is R10 500 for 5. On these 5 tires, I should get in excess of 80 000km, for a cost of R0.13/km.

Of course, I also have to buy fuel, and he has to buy food supplements etc to the value of "several thousand rand".

Thus it is cheaper to drive a Patrol than to run.
