Here's another static one.
I don't know if you noticed the fact that the current wheels look too small for my Trol so I definitely need bigger ones.
Regarding your visit to Angola, I can definitely help you that if you'd like. Bear in mind that most of these country's secrets still remain hidden. Beware of mines if you wander off the track and hurry up cause the chinese are paving up the country with baaaad tar.

Gerrit I don't want to pick a fight here, but a buddy of mine recently managed 160 000 km on a set of BF A/T's? Anyway, all my info is on the older BF MT's, I don't know the KM2 at all.
I have a friend who operates 3 Safari bakkies and a Patrol bakkie. His business is testing boreholes and therefore he lugs heavy equipment over rough terrain all the time. He uses 33"BF MT's virtually exclusively because of the grip, but he reckons you have to look after them all the time or they get "nobbly" and he doesn't get more than 50 000 km from a set.
However some day I will probably also succumb to the inexorable appeal of MT tires.

No problem. No fights here, just discussions.

Very, very impressive. What vehicle were they on and in what application? What I am getting at is that tyre life depends heavily on the way they are used and also to some extent on the weight and suspension design of the vehicle they are fitted to. I know of several people who have only achieved 60000 km or so on BFG A/Ts and that was in overlanding use.

That sounds like good mileage in a hard and heavy application. Has he tried A/Ts and how did they do under the same conditions?

for now - I will stick to my Bridgestone Duellers A/T .. great gr, great mileage [kilometrage???] silent, superb on the wet roads, I have never experienced aqua plaining -
BUT - back to the owner of this thread - Tks for pict No. 2 - and I can see why you want bigger tyres. [actually, you NEED bigger tyres] -
It seems that the general consensus is that 285/75/16 is ideal on the Y61 Patrol - the choice for MT and A/T is a 50/50 BUT in your instance and with the rainfall you guys are blessed with up there and with the type of soil - Me thinks that M/T's are justified .. you are likely to need them.
Just my 10 Kwanza's worth.. Or you wanna give me Penny for my thoughts?

I run 33 MTs (cooper STT) and can give the following feedback
1. I also have 4.2D, although have very low boost after market turbo (more altitude compensator) and when I "upgraded" felt no difference in tar road performance.
2. Speedo is now correct
3. I wish I could use them as they should be used (80/20) they don't like tar, but I'm still expecting high mileage (done about 15,000km so far)
4. Noise is negligible, especially with TD4.2, so I wouldn't worry
5. I think (I repeat, I think) they give some vibration through to my steering wheel, noticeable on tar
6. Increased clearance with 33" great
7. Psychological factor of having bigger rubber at your control
8. Look factors count for something too
9. My next tyres will be MT and will be kuhmo KL71, purely out of curiosity
10. You can't go wrong with either BFG AT or MT.
Cheers

Hi Gerrit
Haven't got the hang of quoting yet, sorry.
You are quite correct, vehicle type and usage is very important. This particular instance is a 2wd Hilux KZ-TE with an intercooler and stage 2 head conversion. The owner is an electrical contractor who specialized in larger installations. He does a lot of work installing generators and borehole pumps etc. on game ranches, and also a lot of work in security complexes. The vehicle routinely carries heavy loads and often tows a large four-wheeled flatbed trailer, and usage is approx. 40% town driving and 60% longer trips, and the owner is always in a hurry. On his 4.8 Patrol he will only manage about 100 000km on his BF's
The borehole tester used to use AT's, and reckons on 80-100 000 km on a set of those.
PMC that's a great Troll you've got there.
Cheers
Peter
