Thanks Oom Mac
I read a letter with similar content recently in one of the mags, and it is one of the reasons I am trying to get this sorted now. I have phoned both Tuffstuff and Cross Country. Tuffstuff has promised me a quote as soon as their E-mail is back up and running, and cross country has quoted.
Cross Country's quote specifies a minimum vehicle value excluding accesories as R70k, and the maximum sum insured is R1m unless agreed in writing. Which means that at an estimated R80k I am still ok with Cross Country, but only just.
I will let you know what Tuffstuff says.

I used to be with Tuffstuff until April this year, but they became uninterested in negotiating the premium and I couldn't justify the almost R200/month they charged for debit order fees, underwriting charges etc. so I moved back to Outsurance

What with 4 cars in the yard, all of'm 4x4's nogal [en boonop Datsuns] we have been wit various insurers over time [Dwergie consolidated all to Auto & General now] but I can honestly say that the BEST service, pricing and even teh "phone experiences" the best - was undoubtedly OUTsurance - and the WORST was Dial Direct [too bad D D is eintlik ook maar A & G...] - And AA was a {very} short head behind OUTsurance.

Just tried to get a quote from the AA. They do not cover you for any competitive use (so no fundi challenge or even AAWDC inter-club fun days), and do not know what a 4x4 trail is. Also their 3rd party insurance is only valid within SA and according to the girl I spoke to they would not cover me in Bots, Zambia or Angola
Oh and if it breaks and you need a hire car, they could only offer me a sedan or a 2l single-cab bakkie. At this point i gave up and never even got as far as to ask about repatriation or any of those.

TuffStuff fill recover your vehicle even from Zambia or send you the spares you need if you can get it fix there.
Other insurance need you to get you vehicle to the border then they will come and collect it. Your medical cover outside of South Africa is R1mil from TuffStuff.

Hi Peter
I had quite an experience when I entered the Bridgestone Fundi. They mentioned that only Cross Country will cover you if you participate, so I phoned outsurance to cancell and to move to Cross Country. The chap at the call centre protested heavily and also confirmed that they will in fact cover me even though this is a 4x4 competition, and he gave the following example:
If you insure your bicicle, and then compete in the Argus, why would they not cover you?
Same with 4x4, it is designed for off-roading and tracks and as long as you are not doing this professionally (For Payment), then they do not have an issue. Ask them to put the confirmation on paper.....! I have a letter from an Outsurance actuary confirming that I am covered.

i still think OUTsurance is teh better one of the bunch out there - more honestey & sincerity and less "wriggling out of it"

Does Outsurance cover you outside RSA?
Will they recover your vehicle?
Have they got medical cover for you outside RSA?
