Guys,
I also doubted the auto design on a Jeep WJ 3.1 a few years ago.
I bypassed the radiator Auto cooler and tried to tow to Nelspruit.
Leaving Pretoria reaching Bronkhorstspruit climb on the highway the gearbox overheated and went into limp mode.
Crawled the way there and immediately re-introduced the radiator A/T cooler.
Never had the problem again.
I am convinced that serves a big purpose as part of cooling of the A/T at least.
