On my Range Rover na motor...
I did the chip and exhaust thing.
My gain was something like 7kw so not much at all really.
On my Patrol it was much more.
As I said it depends on how optimally your vehicle is running before you implement the mods.
What is being advocated above is the reason for a dyno.
You plot your map there, call it your base map and then your tuner should conduct live tuning on the road.
In my experience same dyno same car. Year after year the results are consistent/comparable.
Torque is almost impossible to accurately measure through an auto box like in the Patrol.
Because of slip etc.
The above proposed test sounds like a complete waste of time

To measure anything meaningfully
Requires a controlled environment.
Different Dynos give different results.
SAC loves 30 % compensation values which makes readings look way better than they are.
If you want to verify your gains
Do before and after on two different dynos.
That will give you an independant comparative.

The only way to make real power is with forced induction. Power is limited to the amount of air you can get into your engine weather it be turbo or supercharged.
Doing a chip and exhaust is expensive it if you compaire the money spent vs the power gained.
I do all my dyno runs at SAC Centurion. They measure power at the wheels so there are no calculations involved. I do a pre dyno and post then you can see what has really been gained.
Not everyone like measuring power at the wheels, because its quite scary to see how much power you loose from the engine to the wheels.
I use it for what it is........ a measuring tool

For clarification
The compensation figures I referred to are for altitude.
It stands to reason tben if you compenate at 20% the results will read lower than at 30%
Whatever the compensation value is needs to be the same before and after.
Where unethical tuners come in is manipulating tbe before and after compensation %.

When you surpercharged the patrol did you also use a chip?

Chip is unavoidable.
You need something to lie to the ecu.
The chip is required to provide all the false information into the ECU to get it to do what you need it too.
So if you need more fuel you must tell the ecu you are not getting enough fuel etc.
You do this via the chip.
Further you need an additional fuel pump to deliver the fuel required.
The ECU has no neans to accomodate this.

The only way to make power is to get more fuel and air into the engine and the mixtures (air ;fuel;timing)has to be 100% correct .So by whipping the cylinder head off skimming the cylinder head chasing compression ,changing swept volumes etc and not doing fuel and timing to suit is going to result in disappointment ..Like Michael is saying you can turbo it but then you have to alter the timing and fuel to accommodate the extra air being forced into the engine..
My opinion ..I'll buy a Motec M84 ECU and get the engine dyno done where all the mixtures are properly done through out the rev range then there is no engine mods and under bonnet temps etc etc etc that has to be taken into consideration,and when you want to sell your car you simply unplug the Motec and your car is back to standard.
Google Motec and see how many people are using it

I agree, this 4.2 turbo that I got yesterday is going to have to go in for tuning (air/fuel) think it is now running too rich, was tuned for the coast now up on the high veld! Think cooling with a turboed motor can also be an issue this one has a second radiator mounted in the bull bar (water) apart from the intercooler

I'll chuck my opinion into the hat then as well - I would recommend only going as far as the exhaust, even if it doesnt help with the power, starting up a free flowing 4.8 puts a smile on the face everytime.
Mine had a chip on as well from the prev owner. I have unplugged it though.
The main reason I bought a patrol was the legendary reliability. I dont want to mess with any settings that Nissan designed as obviously they work very well.
If its your toy, then sure, turbo it, supercharge it etc, but, for me, if its a holiday, long distance cruiser, it needs to be as reliable as possible.
