New to this forum- Need some advice please
Good day to all
I am currently in a difficult position, because I need to decide
I am currently a very happy owner of a 1998 Land Cruiser 100GX 4500efi, and enjoying this vehicle so far
But;
I have been doing a bit of reading, looking at some vehicles advertised, and it seems, that the Patrol, both 4500 and 4800, seems to be better priced
I have a few questions, and if someone does have some time to assist, I will really appreciate it
Is the Patrol similar value for money as the Land Cruiser, or better?
Is the ride quality similar? Does the Patrol also have coil springs all around?
I have read that the 4800 engine is more powerful, but what about fuel usage?
How available is parts in SA, and are the more expensive than Toyota parts?
Does the Patrol also come standard with gearbox and front and rear diff lockers?
What should I be most afraid of when looking for an old Patrol? I decided on the petrol Toyota motor, because I felt there is less to worry about, when looking at a used vehicle, versus diesel? I presume this would be similar? Are the 4800 engine good for say 450 000km's?
Thank you for now, I will post more questions as this grows
Regards

Re: New to this forum- Need some advice please
Hi welcome here
Patrols are better value for money all round .stronger drive train and very strong motors ...i personally will give the 2001 to 2010 30l a miss but the crd one is a machine
Coils all round yes
Has rear locker and becouse its not a permanent 4x4 no central locker needed once you select 4x4 its is done
Patrols have flex so we all want a front locker but you will hardy ever need it .
There are guys with big km on their patrols ....like close to 1 million
Have a look in australia but having 500k on a patrol is nothing new
All dealers are crazy with prices ....nissan included toy and nissan spares are about the same
We have terrain taimer and so on to help with most things
Nothing against a cruiser i prefer a strong no nonsense car and the patrol works for me in that way
Hope it helps

Re: New to this forum- Need some advice please
looking at specification sheets it would seem they are very similar vehicles.
Both have large, straight six engines, live axles and coil springs all round.
But there are lots of detail differences.
The Patrol's axles are far more robust. The gearboxes and transfer cases are legendary. The track length is wider and the wheelbase is longer, despite the overall length being slightly shorter. This means that the Patrol is probably more stable on the road and on side slopes, and better departure angle, but smaller break-over angle.
The Patrol is part-time 4x4, not full-time, so it does not need a centre diff lock. This and the centrally mounted rear diff also means the drive for the rear axle does not go through the chain in the tranfer case, thus the transfer case lasts a lot longer. It has a rear locker, but no front locker.
I have not driven a 105 Cruiser, but I have never driven a vehicle that is more comfortable on very bad roads than a Patrol. But it can feel harsh on a bad tar road when compared to something with independent suspension. I would expect fuel consumption to be similar.
The 4.5 Patrol is a much simpler engine than the EFI, and not as powerful, but th 4.8 is of similar technology and considerably more powerful.
But why don't you come join us at Moegatle on the 20th and see for yourself?

Re: New to this forum- Need some advice please
Thank you to all that have shared their knowledge
The choice I wish to make, has solely got to do with the best possible value for money, I can buy
I do think that the two makes of vehicle's are very similar, both in reliability and build quality
Please help me with a few more questions;
Can you fit an extra fuel tank "underneath the vehicle"?
Can aftermarket "front diff-lockers" be fitted? (I realize this might never be needed in normal driving conditions)
Is there a prevalence to either the 4500 or 4800?
Does anyone of these two models have some sort of engine downfall (maybe prone to overheating, or something like that?)
What models are available? (4800 GRX). and ? I presume the GRX is more luxury?
How is the front axle engaged? Do you lock the front hubs by turning something on them? (like the old Hilux?)
I see some vehicles have roof-racks fitted. Are these racks mounted on the rails of the roof? how strong is this method?
I have also read that some vehicles have an extra battery fitted. Is this in the engine bay? Is there normally space, or difficult to do?
Thank you

Re: New to this forum- Need some advice please
Patrols come out standard with sup tanks
There is space for duel battery but rather put it in the back for a lot of reasons discussed here before
4.8 and 4.5 even 4.2 are bullet proof motors all patrols use same gearboxes and there are 2 diff options.
No overheating problems no .
The 4.8 grx is a auto full spec 4.8 gl is manual but nissan stoped bringing them in in 2005 .
4.5 has auto and manual grx options also the gl less fancy model .
You have a lot of options for front lockers but first drive one and then decide.
Roof racks are gutter mounted yes
Most patrols has auto locking hubs on front axle ....
Hope it helps

Re: New to this forum- Need some advice please
It is possible to fit about 200l of tankage under the Patrol.
But you may have to have custom tanks made to get there.
ARB make a selectable locker and there are a couple of auto lockers available.

Baie dankie Reenen; jy is n man vol humorsin
Maar ek kry jou boodskap, hard en duidelik
Thank you for the other comments
When I initially decided on the Cruiser I have, I chose the model with less goodies, and also few electrics, and the manual box. The reason for this, I thought, less electronics and a manual box, should lead to less maintenance in the long run, and my dreams to visit a few far places, might be more easier
I also thought, that a manual box might be easier to use when traversing mountain passes, especially when going down steep sides, and the engine could help with the braking. It should also be slightly better on fuel consumption
Tinus, you mentioned the gearboxes are good and strong, does this also count for the auto box?
What would be your number one choice vehicle, should you wish to point one out for me??
Many thanks again
