2000 4.2d Patrol failing alternator

Post by EFH »

So seems my Patrol has a dying alternator. Had belts changed for roadworthy and now its dying, all the classic signs, weird warnings, fading headlights etc. Other than agents where can I look? Autozone ?

Ag kak.

I guess one would take the alternator out and have it rebuild / refurbished which should cost between 1000 - 2000 R... :mytwocents:

mine did the same. At Elliot I had to find a workshop, Thank The Lord I found the right people ... chop chop the found the positive wire on the alttrntr has come loose [not off, just loose ]
Tightened it and iNyathi was good to go, did it once again .. I tightened the nut and since is going A 1

Yes, as long as the job is done properly.
Don't just fix the immediate problem, but do a full overhaul. New bearings, brushes and regulator unit.

I checked the belt, tightened it slightly, I'll check the wires on the alternator. Got a jump from a fellow camper this morning, drove 45km, now tick tick tick when trying to start immediately after switching off. Luckily I stopped on an incline, so I'll try bump start when I leave.
