I thought I would share another experience from my trip through Africa...
After finding the failed glow plug and putting the engine back together, it ran smoothly, but with no power. The garage tried everything they could think of, different MAFs, pipes, bench test of the injectors, etc., etc. but no luck in Arusha. Eventually I gave up and drove to Nairobi where I took it to the local experts, Field & Industrial Technical Services. After identifying that there was no boost they insisted on changing the injectors as a first step (they said no charge if it didn't cure the problem). They did, and problem solved!
They say 9/10 times any issue with the ZD30 is the injectors. When driving on dodgy diesel in Africa they recommend adding half a bottle of 2-stroke oil to every tank. Others recommend adding injector cleaner instead. Either way, probably worth putting in something as a precaution on a long trip.

Re: Injector failure
I'm just wondering whether a dodgy injector might have been the reason for the glowplug failure in the first place?

Re: Injector failure
Hi Hugh, an interesting post. I think I might have missed something though, can you wind back a bit to how you suspected a faulty glow plug in the first place, or if its in another post please give me the link. Also, did you have any codes thrown up from the engine management. In my travels, I got used to the dirty fuel code as it clears on restart, but periodically read the stored codes just to make sure there was nothing sinister and then cleared them as per the manual.
I was told that dirty diesel was often because it was "cut" with cheaper paraffin or because of water. I never added 2 stroke oil and wonder what it acts as. The sulphur content of the diesel up North is high enough to lubricate the injectors.
Regards.

Re: Injector failure
Peter, I think a dodgy injector can actually make a glow plug fail.
About the 2 stroke.......it will make no difference whatsoever to dirty fuel. It only aids as a lubricant and not even sure how effective it is realky

Re: Injector failure
Not sure why the 2-strike is recommended, but I assume it deals with the kerosene mix, which doesn’t lubricate well.
